Wetland Restoration Program Director
The Wetland Restoration Program Director will be an essential part of the Parks Foundation leadership team. This position presents an exciting opportunity to transform an abandoned golf course into a healthy wetland nature study area accessible to the 400,000+ citizens living in the Reno-Sparks area. This is a one-year contract (September 2018-August 2019) that we anticipate developing into a full-time permanent position. During this planning year, the Program Director will take primary responsibility for developing an evidence-based master plan to rehabilitate and transform a 220-acre wetland into a high-functioning nature study area.
Beginning in September 2019, an operational AmeriCorps grant will begin and this Program Director will recruit and supervise 10 full-time AmeriCorps wetland restoration technicians who will transform this degraded but valuable wetland area into what will be known as the Truckee Meadows Nature Study Area. This future restoration work will entail removing invasive species and restoring native plant species, clearing natural and unnatural debris, constructing bird blinds, trails, a boardwalk, interpretive signage, and similar amenities. The Program Director will manage both the operational and administrative components of this work. Essentially, this individual will have one year to develop a detailed plan on how to implement a new wetland restoration program that produces high-quality, publishable results.

Timeline for Service: September 2018 start with annual contract review.
Research and develop a comprehensive work plan needed to create a wetland nature study area:
- Develop qualitative (e.g. Photo Point) and quantitative (e.g. ANOVA) methodologies to be followed during the operational phase of the program;
- Perform preliminary natural features assessments including invasive, threatened, and endangered species surveys;
- Perform preliminary wetland delineation;
- Create a multi-year timeline detailing restoration goals and milestones.
Manage the operational and administrative duties associated with a federal AmeriCorps grant:
- Assist in writing the 2019 AmeriCorps operational grant application;
- Plan for the recruitment and training of 10 AmeriCorps wetland restoration technicians;
- Track grant performance measures;
- Prepare and submit quarterly program and financial grant reports;
- Assist the Development Officer in securing federal and private grants to support the program.
Develop and manage professional partnerships, including those with:
- Government agencies such as Truckee Meadows Water Authority, divisions under the Nevada Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, the University of Nevada, the National Park Service, US Fish and Wildlife Service, the Nevada
- Department of Wildlife, the City of Reno, other nonprofits, and more;
Communicate goals and objectives with the public by:
- Conducting public charrettes to elicit citizen input;
- Publishing press releases and holding interviews with local news stations.
Perform other duties as assigned, including but not limited to:
- Leading occasional on-site programming such as walks, hikes, or school programs. Training will be provided as necessary;
- Participating in special events throughout the year including occasional evenings and weekends.
- PhD or Master’s degree in ecology, restoration, environmental science, or related field and 2+ years professional experience;
- Exceptional writing and communication skills;
- Experience managing data collection and creating written reports;
- Must pass a background check and hold a valid driver’s license;
- Preferred: experience managing budgets;
- Preferred: 2+ years in a management position;
- Preferred: Nevada noxious plant identification knowledge;
- Preferred: experience serving as, or managing AmeriCorps and/or Peace Corps members.
$40,000 first-year, non-negotiable
80 hours personal leave per calendar year, accruable up to 100 hours. 80 hours sick leave per calendar year, non-accruable. Up to $400 per month for health coverage reimbursement (proof of health insurance required); retirement IRA matched at 3% after one-year of employment.
