The University of Alabama, the state’s flagship public university, seeks an experienced leader to be the inaugural Director of the Alabama Water Institute (AWI). The AWI is envisioned to become a world-class, interdisciplinary research institute that engages in basic and applied research in the area of fresh water. It will leverage existing UA strengths, identify and address future challenges, and provide broad-based strategic planning that will allow the state, region, and nation to meet water needs of the future. The AWI will employ collaboration across the entire University, as well as with peer institutions and regional centers. It is expected that the Institute will work closely with the National Water Center — a NOAA facility that is located on the University campus and dedicated to hydrological analysis, forecasting, and decision support. Initially, the Institute will embrace the activities of four existing research centers at UA: (1) The Environmental Institute, which has a longstanding focus on water quality research; (2) the Center for Freshwater Studies, which is dedicated to the advancement of interdisciplinary research on freshwater systems; (3) the Center for Advanced Public Safety, which is an information technology producer and systems integrator with the goal of supporting safety and emergency management systems and data; and (4) the Water Policy and Law Institute, which provides local, national, and international guidance in the development of public policy and functional legal regimes for water resources through education, research, and policy analysis. Additional involvement is expected from the University’s Center for Business and Economic Research, Center for Sedimentary Basin Studies, and the Alabama Center for Insurance Information and Research. Furthermore, the University anticipates establishing two new research centers that will fall under the umbrella of the AWI: a Center for Computational Hydrology and a Center for Remote Sensing.

The Director of the AWI will hold a tenured faculty position. The successful candidate will have an earned doctorate, a distinguished research record, and experience directing a large, diverse organization. Along with management of AWI, the principal duties of the director will include establishing the vision, mission, and strategic directions for the AWI, establishing and managing projects with other institutions, establishing and maintaining close working relationships with federal, state, and local governmental partners, and developing strategic relationships with the private sector.
