Research Associate

Imperial College London

London, United Kingdom 🇬🇧

Job summary

This post will carry out research programmes as part of a project to develop a digital service based on interdisciplinary systems approaches to infrastructure and collaboration that allows end-users to explore land use and water system planning options through a virtual participatory process supported by state-of-the-art models. The research involves co-creating a web-based and end-user led prototype called a virtual decision room (VDR) to support transition towards a sustainable digital society. The VDR will be co-created with local government, the local community, regulators and water utility companies to collaboratively plan and evaluate the environmental sustainability of urban growth planning scenarios using co-designed water neutrality indicators during the project.

Duties and responsibilities

You will act as the modelling lead in applying and building on the CityWat model [https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/1748-9326/abb050/pdf] that will underpin the simulations for the VDR. The main application of CityWat will be to Manchester’s urban water cycle. The main expected developments to CityWat will be in representing land-surface runoff and pollution processes. Collaborators at BGS will serve as experts on surface pollution to advise in this. If we include the supply system (which will be ideal), a representation of the long-distance water transfers will also be developed.

You will also be closely linked to the Centre for Systems Engineering and Innovation in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, which is led by Dr Ana Mijic and Professor Jennifer Whyte, and will engage broadly with the active research communities in water systems modelling at Imperial College London.

Essential requirements

  • Hold a PhD in numerical and/or computational modelling in urban hydrology, water management or a closely related discipline, or equivalent research, industrial or commercial experience
  • Knowledge of simulation methods for a variety of water management applications, in particular urban hydrology and water infrastructure.
  • Experience in the application of computational methods to the urban water cycle.
  • Ability to relate to other researchers, and students with a variety of backgrounds in an academic context and to work as part of a team.
  • Ability to interact successfully with others to learn and teach new skills.
