The key purpose of the role is to lead the strategic direction of Linklaters firmwide ISO 14001:2015 certified environmental sustainability programme, ensuring legal and regulatory compliance, cost efficient and sustainable Operations, and environmental risk mitigation. Engagement is required with both internal and external stakeholders, working closely with the firms global Corporate Responsibility team and other business functions to ensure our environmental sustainability programme is integrated into the firm’s Responsible Business strand of our strategy.
Reporting to the Engineering Services Manager, the role also supports and reports to the UK Head of Operations, Global COO/CIO and Head of Corporate Responsibility.
The role has senior level accountability, reporting to the Partnership Board Corporate Responsibility Committee (CRC).
The role is required to lead and improve upon the firm’s global ISO 14001:2015 certification of the Corporate Environmental Management System, including Greenhouse Gas accounting and environmental performance management of our key environmental aspects, covering energy use, business travel, waste generation and disposal, use of resources; extending this to the mitigation of climate change and environmental risk and implementation of adaptation strategies. This includes element of sustainable procurement.
By measuring, monitoring and reporting, the role will influence efficient, consistent and cost-effective operations across the impact areas, delivering reductions in consumption and the utilisation of resources.
Using experience in analysis, performance reporting and strategy setting, the role has line management responsibility for 2 heads and 2 ephemeral summer environment interns with allocation to specific sustainability projects.
The role provides leadership and training to the global environment team and provides leadership to the Linklaters alliance and best friends firms.
The role’s sphere of influence and interaction is extensive, requiring a proven ability to influence people outside the line of management chain.
The reporting generated by this role will support the firm’s communication, marketing and reporting on environmental management to the firm’s people, clients and other stakeholders.
The development and implementation of the Global Environmental Policy and Programme is dependent on respected working relationships with relevant Partners, Heads of Practice, Regional COOs, COOs, Business Managers, Client Relationship Managers, Operations Managers and their teams, Directors and Senior Managers across Business Services, including the firm’s Corporate Responsibility team andSourcing and Supply team.
Key responsibilities and challenges
Lead, develop, and implement environmental, strategies, policies and programmes
Lead the firm’s Global Environment Programme, ensuring compliance of the Corporate Environmental Management System to ISO 14001
Develop the firm’s environment strategy and policies providing expert knowledge and direction, presenting these to the PB CRC and the relevant Function Heads, Directors and Partners, including the UK Head of Operations, Head of International Premises, RCOOs and CFOO.
Contribute to the delivery of environmental content for the firm’s Corporate Responsibly Programme, e.g. linklaters.com, UNGC submission.
Advise on sustainable buildings and office design methods, influencing building renovation and refit works.
Work across the Business Teams functions and with the relevant practice groups to identify industry trends which have links to environment and sustainability. Implement these as required, influencing others to deliver by providing guidance, direction and enabling personal accountability.
Keep up to date with current trends and emerging themes.
Manage and create the firm’s unique and culturally suited staff engagement campaigns and awareness activities.
Ensure compliance with relevant environmental legislation and best practice standards including jointly managing the firm’s mandatory legislative commitments under the UK Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficiency Scheme and ESOS.
Develop action plans, monitor and measure progress
Oversee the global environmental performance data entered into the environmental performance database and/or into the UL/Credit360 software.
Responsibility for the environmental performance reporting and GHG accounting processes required.
Use this data to develop actions plans ensuring it’s accuracy via external assurance processes. Oversee the team which collates, collects and analyses this data offering expert knowledge to ensure accuracy.
Communicate and train office representatives in deciphering environmental data.
Influence internal stakeholders to use the benchmarking results to direct the development of their own workstreams.
Reporting and Partnerships
Report progress as required to ExComm and the PB Corporate Responsibility Committee, deliver recommendations and achieve approval for strategy and plans.
Produce reports and/or presentations for the UK Head of Operations, CFOO, PB CRC and ExCom.
Ensure that the environment component of the firm’s CR is delivered annually.
Manage and deliver the programmes commitments to achieve and/or maintain external accreditations, for example, BREEAM In-Use, VeriSustain assurance, ISO 14001 and carbon disclosure project.
Lead the response to pitch documents and annual client sustainability questionnaires and any other client requests which may arise.
Communication and Marketing
Identifying and drive forward opportunities for senior leaders in the firm to promote the firm’s environmental strategy.
Identify and drive forward opportunities for integrating key environmental messages into various communications.
Project manage, design, co-ordinate and report progress on environmental campaigns.
Lead and foster the development of both the UK and global Environmental Representatives and Environmental Champions networks.
Work with the CR colleagues to develop and deliver training materials for inductions, pitch documents.
Manage a budget to ensure the firm’s environmental initiatives are met and to influence other budget holders to utilise their budgets with sustainability achievements in mind.
Provide advice and lead on the environmental aspects of the sustainable procurement of goods and services.
Identify any Environment Awards that would be appropriate to enter.
Provide direction and support to the Environment and Energy Advisor, Global Environment and Sustainability Co-ordinator
Lead the Environmental Science Summer Student Placement Programme
Inspire the team to support work experience students.

Advising on the development of the firm’s environment policies to ensure they are aligned with strategy and business needs.
Keep up to date on major changes to government policy, legislation, best practice and latest thinking across jurisdictions. Recommend changes to the firm’s policies to incorporate amendments.
Support Operations in developing a Global Mindset.
Lead ad hoc Operations projects.

Education / Qualification
Degree level – Environmental Science
Lead Auditor – ISO 14001
Proven track record in Environmental Management in the professional services sector across a global real estate portfolio, managing a corporate ISO 14001:2015 certification
Broad knowledge of corporate responsibility and how environment supports this.
Understands the concepts and systems of Sustainable Building Design (LEED, BREEAM etc)
Policy review and legislative awareness
Understanding of benchmarking tools and reporting models e.g. Carbon Disclosure Project, Ecovadis, UNGC
Understanding of the global sustainability landscape e.g. WRI, COP 21 etc.
Project management experience
Strong awareness and understanding of strategic business planning
Excellent personal communication skills, both written and verbal
Ability to prioritise and juggle competing workloads in a fast paced environment
Excellent working ability in Microsoft Office applications
