We have an exciting opportunity in the Department of Civil and Structural Engineering for someone seeking a new challenge. The Project
This is a prestigious project which is funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). The overall aim of this project is to develop a new airborne acoustic holographic technology that will enable researchers and practitioners to measure remotely the dynamics of rivers. A key outcome of the project will be the specification of the new holographic technology and integrated hydrodynamic algorithms to be used as the next generation of river flow monitoring systems. This new technology will yield a step change in the quality of data available, delivering the potential for effective real-time monitoring of river systems.

Main duties and responsibilities

  • Supporting the successful completion of the EPSRC project and delivering impact from the proposed technology.
  • Developing new theory and instrumentation to understand the link between the airborne acoustics field, behaviour of the free surface of an open channel and underlying turbulence, and other key hydraulic characteristics.
  • Assisting in the development of software that uses these new algorithms and with its integration into an existing commercial package.
  • Supporting the project team in terms of internal reporting and external dissemination of the project outcomes to a range of audiences.
  • Co-ordinating all testing requirements and CFD work across all packages with the facilities available.

The Person
The ideal candidate will have strong experimental and theoretical skills, understanding of the wave phenomena, fluid dynamics and have the ability to write computer code and to analyse data efficiently. You must be self-motivated and be able to work both independently and as part of a team. It is essential that you have a good first degree and hold, or are close to completing, a PhD in Engineering, Physics, Computing, Mathematics or related discipline. Some experience in water infrastructure and its management will be beneficial. You must also be willing to undertake travel within the UK and overseas. An important skill is the ability to present and communicate complex information to our partners and potential end users in a concise and clear form. You will enjoy the support of the academic experts at our Faculty of Engineering and our non academic partners, and will be provided with access to top of the range laboratory and computing facilities.
