PostDoc Position on Citizen Science for Sustainable Groundwater Use

Scholarship description: A consortium consisting of the University of Copenhagen (lead of the project); Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland, University of the Western Cape (UWC), South Africa; the International Water Management Institute (IWMI), South Africa; DHI, South Africa; and Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) including Municipalities in South Africa, is implementing a research project under the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs for collaboration projects in growth and transition countries. The project is entitled “Improving Sustainable Groundwater Use in South Africa”. The study area is the Hout/Sand catchment, Limpopo Province of South Africa. The project links to and contributes to the objectives of the Danish–South African Government-to-Government strategic cooperation on Water and Energy in terms of developing knowledge, capacity and guidelines for sustainable groundwater management in South Africa.

Position: One PostDoc position within Citizen Science for 12 months (1 year) is available, preferably a South Africa citizen familiar with socio-cultural and hydrogeological aspects of the study region including local language(s). The successful candidate will start in the second half of 2018.

Salary Scale: R21,000 per month

Location: The successful candidate will be employed at the University of the Western Cape but with expected part time stationing in the field. As part of her/his commitment, s/he is expected to set up or revamp long-term groundwater monitoring and management systems using citizen science approaches based on engagement with local citizens and stakeholders in fulfilling the project tasks in the Hout/Sand catchment. S/he is expected to spend at least one month at UWC in Cape Town, 1-2 months at IWMI in Pretoria and one month in Denmark in addition to being in the study catchment for field work.

Requirements: The applicant should hold a PhD degree in hydrology/water resources, integrated water resource management (IWRM), water and sanitation, or water-related discipline from development, sociology or socio-economics perspective.

Responsibilities: The PostDoc Research Fellow will conduct original research, support project activities including in the field, collaborate with partners and stakeholders, disseminate research findings and publish in accredited journals with researchers on the project.
