The Director- Coalition for the Delaware River Watershed (www.delriverwatershed.org) will be responsible for overseeing all Coalition activities, including member relations, advancing the Coalition’s conservation agenda, and raising awareness of the Delaware River Watershed with the public, media, and policymakers, as well as working with the Vice President of Government Relations to advance New Jersey Audubon’s conservation agenda. General responsibilities include managing a three-member staff team, consultants, and re-grant recipients; collaborating with Coalition members and partners; project planning and implementation; overseeing communications with the media, general public, and funders; leading advocacy efforts; and fundraising. Specific tasks undertaken by the Director will encompass managing the planning and implementation grassroots/grasstops outreach and political strategy, overseeing media outreach, supervising meeting and conference planning and management, public speaking, budgeting, and writing press releases, grant applications, and other materials.
Major Responsibilities :
- Direct Coalition activities including coordination of the Steering Committee and other standing committees and workgroups, member recruitment and outreach, conference and meeting planning, federal and state advocacy, and internal and external communications.
- With coordination with the HR department, supervise multiple staff working on the Coalition including developing workplans, providing oversight and management of projects, and performing annual and semi-annual evaluations.
- Coach, mentor, and develop staff, including overseeing new employee onboarding and providing career development planning and opportunities.
- Develop, oversee, and coordinate Coalition conservation campaigns, including outreach to Legislators and media, mobilizing member organizations to take action, and serving as the liaison with congressional offices on behalf of the Coalition
- Build and maintain relationship with members of Congress, congressional staff, and federal agency staff
- Draft letters to decision-makers that reflect NJA and Coalition concerns, position, or policy suggestions.
- Coordinate activities by Coalition members and other partners to support and promote increased conservation funding for the Delaware River Basin.
- Oversee the Coalition’s state conservation agendas in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware through managing the Conservation Associate, including developing individual strategies for each state, working with State Outreach Lead grantees, and coordinating with Coalition members in each state.
- Speak at public forums, meetings, and events on various topics. Represent New Jersey Audubon and the Coalition in meetings and events and before various organizations as necessary.
- Work with the Steering Committee to develop and implement policy priorities and associated work plans.
- Oversee the development and implementation of a communications and media strategy around Coalition efforts through managing the Outreach and Communications Associate, including creating internet and social media communications tools
- Work with NJA Communications staff, consultants, and the Outreach and Communications Associate to prepare press releases, LTEs, and opinion pieces and securing media coverage pertaining to NJA and Coalition conservation agenda.
- Oversee writing and distribution of outreach materials, releases, and other products for New Jersey Audubon, Coalition members, policymakers and the public.
- Oversee the planning, organization, and execution of special events, including the Annual Delaware River Watershed Forum, Annual Coalition Member meeting, and other events through supervising the Project Manager.
- Oversee the planning and implementation of special projects, including coordination with interstate agencies, state agencies, and nongovernmental organizations on awareness campaigns for the Delaware River Basin through supervising the Project Manager.
- Work to secure additional funding from new resources for the expansion and continuation of the Coalition’s efforts. Serve as point of contact for funding organizations, and write grant applications and reports.
- Oversee all components of specific grants, including managing staff, advocacy, outreach, media and member engagement efforts, and reporting requirements.
- Prepare necessary reports for the public, Coalition membership, the Board, the President and the Vice Presidents
- Manage the overall operational, budgetary, and financial responsibilities and activities of the Coalition, including monitoring invoicing, payments, and financial reports for Coalition grants, re-grants, and consultants
- Develop a broad understanding of the activities and accomplishments of the Coalition with the goal of enhancing collaboration among members, raising awareness of activities throughout the Basin, and identifying opportunities for Coalition engagement.
- Support the Government Relations Vice President on Department and organizational priorities.
- Participate with other staff to towards daily operations at the assigned work location.
- Perform other related duties as assigned and perform additional tasks related to supporting the organizations
- Four-year degree with five years of work relevant work experience. Advanced degree desirable.
- Five years progressively responsible experience in coalition or collaboration work as well as experience in developing and implementing advocacy campaigns, grassroots organizing, media, and environmental advocacy desirable.
- Two or more years experience in a managerial role overseeing full-time staff.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, project management skills, and knowledge of environmental and conservation issues required.
- Excellent Computer Skills – Microsoft Office.
- Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills with the ability to relate to and motivate a diverse range of people and exercise cultural competence and inclusion.
- Excellent organizational, time and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects, shifting priorities and meet deadlines
- Organized self-starter able to work independently in the execution of his or her responsibilities while collaborating with other organizations in various coalitions.
- Media, web, legislative and grassroots advocacy and grant writing experience desired.
- Ability to demonstrate initiative and a positive attitude.
- Strong professionalism and work ethic with the ability to exercise discretion and maintain confidentiality.
- Flexibility to adjust hours to meet deadlines and needs of the organization, including availability to work occasional evenings and weekends.
- Must be able to walk on uneven surfaces and be able to lift at least 25 pounds, in order to participate in special events.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to operate a motor vehicle in NJ.
