The goal of the project is to conduct an integrated analysis on upscaling water resources management from farm level to the catchment level in an important citrus producing region, the Jucar river basin in Eastern Spain (Valencia province). It analyzes a series of water conservation policies/measures for their effects on water quantity used in irrigation and on water conserved at different levels. The focus is on the irrigated citrus production in the region. A particular point to evaluate is if the irrigation modernization could result in an increase of water depletion rather than net water savings (rebound effect). Meanwhile, the effects of adoption of more efficient irrigation technologies on surface return flows and aquifer recharge, important for the environment and dependent ecosystems, will be quantified at different levels (from plot to river basin). Policy implications for institutional, technical, and accounting measures that accurately track and economically reward reduced water depletions are highlighted based on the results of the project.
We are looking for a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher with interests in quantitative analysis and modeling of irrigation water use in citrus production and hydrological and environmental responses at different geographical levels. The postdoctoral researcher will take a leading as well as bridging role in an interdisciplinary project, ‘understanding the effects of irrigation modernization in water resources management – citrus production in the Jucar river basin, Spain’.
The successful candidate should have a PhD degree in one of the following disciplines, hydrology, environmental science and engineering, agricultural water management, agronomy. She/he is required to have demonstrated skills in hydrological and/or environmental modelling, computer programming (e.g. R, MATLAB or Python), geographical information systems (e.g. ArcGIS), and scientific communication (including paper and report writing, stakeholder interviews). Proficiency in English and fluency in Spanish are essential. Experience of working with stakeholders in water resources management is highly desirable.
The position is available for 2 years. The preferred starting date is before 1 September 2018. The postdoctoral researcher will be based at Eawag in Dübendorf, supervised by Prof. Dr Hong Yang, Dr Joaquin Jimenez-Martinez and Prof. Dr Mario Schirmer. As it is a collaborative project with a case study in Jucar river basin in Spain, the postdoctoral researcher is expected to spend a considerable time to work closely with the project collaborators Prof. Dr Manuel Pulido Velázquez and Prof. Alberto Garcia Prats in the case study area in Valencia.
