IHE Delft Institute for Water Education offers graduate education in Delft, The Netherlands, and carries out research, innovation, and capacity development projects all over the world. The mission of IHE Delft is to contribute to the education and training of professionals and to develop the capacity of sector organizations, knowledge centres and other institutions active in the fields of water, the environment and infrastructure in developing countries and countries in transition. The institute plays a key role in contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals agenda addressing local water challenges worldwide and with a focus on the Global South.

IHE Delft has a permanent staff of 210, while about 250 guest-faculty from academia and industry contribute to the educational programme. Each year 750 participants, including approximately 200 MSc students, from all over the world attend the various courses at IHE Delft. 

Environmental Planning and Management

Environmental planning is an increasingly complex process – planners are faced with deep uncertainties, with many actors with different perspectives and interests and within an often very dynamic environment. The successful candidate will have expertise in environmental planning and management, and be specifically qualified in policy analysis, strategic planning, planning under uncertainty, and/or environmental / strategic impact assessment. He/she should be a qualified scientist with practical experience preferably also in the Global South. The candidate must have a clear and critical vision on the role that environmental planning and management approaches and tools play in achieving sustainable development to effectively lead our strongly committed team. The successful candidate will facilitate the acquisition of educational, capacity building and research projects in developing countries and countries in transition. He/she will contribute to education, research and capacity development within the Department of Integrated Water Systems and Governance, collaborating with other academic departments within the Institute and with partner institutions. The successful candidate will have the competencies and expertise to work at the intersection of engineering/modelling and the social and political components of environmental planning and management. He/she should be eager to work on interdisciplinary topics with experts from multiple research groups and disciplines, including social scientists, economists, hydrologists, water engineers and aquatic ecologists.

The position is part of the cooperation between IHE Delft and Delft University of Technology. The successful candidate will also be appointed as professor (0.0 fte) at DUT’s Faculty of Technology, Policy and Management.


  • Direct and stimulate the development and embedding of environmental planning and management education and research in the programs and agenda of the Water Management Chair Group and the Institute;
  • Teach and coordinate relevant environmental Masters and Doctoral courses on planning and management at IHE Delft and at partner institutions;
  • Initiate, develop and lead research projects in the field of environmental planning and management;
  • Co-supervise MSc, PhD and Postdoc research projects;
  • Strengthen the collaboration with the Faculty of Technology, Policy and Management of Delft University of Technology, and in particular with the Group of Policy Analysis;
  • Invest in professional networking, particularly the connections with the Netherlands Commission for Environment Assessment NCEA and related agencies in southern and transition countries;
  • Develop innovative post-graduate education and professional training programmes; and
  • Contribute to and acquire international capacity development, advisory and other projects.


The candidate has:

  • A PhD degree in a field relevant to Environmental Planning and Management;
  • Interest and experience in developing and applying integrated approaches to environmental planning and management, especially in the Global South;
  • Academic qualifications at full professor level, demonstrated by a high-level publication record and leadership in research projects;
  • Demonstrated experience in teaching and developing innovative educational materials,
  • Vision and leadership qualities,
  • Motivation to work in a multidisciplinary and multicultural environment;
  • Fluency in English and preferably also in other language(s);
  • Affinity with, and experience working in, developing countries and/or countries in transition. 

Terms of employment

The position is based in Delft, The Netherlands. A temporary contract will be awarded for the first five years, after this period a permanent contract can be offered. A competitive salary is offered depending on qualifications and experience in accordance with the conditions of employment for Dutch Universities. The appointment implies entry into the Netherlands’ Civil Service Pension Fund (ABP). Candidates must be prepared to carry out long- and short-term missions abroad.
