The University of Cincinnati, as part of the Provost’s Water Cluster hiring initiative, invites applications for Director of the Water Center. This position is a tenure track position at the associate or full Professor level with expertise in water related research. The expected start date for the position is January 1, 2017 or August 15, 2017. Rank, tenure, salary, and startup funding will be negotiated and commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and experience.
The Water Center represents a joint initiative between the College of Engineering and Applied Science (CEAS), the McMicken College of Arts & Sciences (A&S), and the College of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning (DAAP). The Water Center seeks to establish our region as a national and global leader in water research, education and outreach. The Water Center will leverage existing strengths within the university and our regional collaborations to solve large-scale challenges associated with integrated water resources management. In addition to the University of Cincinnati, the region flourishes in Water-based activities. The region hosts internationally renowned centers, organizations, and industries such as the US-EPA Andrew W. Breidenbach Environmental Research Center, the CONFLUENCE/Water Technology Innovation Cluster, the Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission (ORSANCO), the Greater Cincinnati Water Works and Metropolitan Sewer District public drinking water and wastewater treatment utilities, other water technology development and environmental consulting industries, and major chemical (such as Procter and Gamble), aerospace (such as General Electric), and energy (such as Duke Energy) industries. The region has among the highest number of professionals and patents per capita in water-related, at the international level.
The mission of the Water Center is to make our region a national and global leader in water resources research, education, and outreach centered on integrated water resources management within and across natural and engineered systems. The Water Center will achieve this mission through a comprehensive integration of the extensive resources that exist within the region. The expectation is that the Water Center will be a resource for researchers from UC and elsewhere, with a rich environment supporting collaborative work and a framework for data collection, access and utilization; and will also serve as a pathway for accessing established key stakeholders, such as potable water and wastewater facilities or landscape planners and designers.
The inaugural director will be charged with leading the faculty in shaping the University’s overall water related research portfolio; assembling and leading multidisciplinary teams to address new opportunities and challenges; strengthening relationships and interactions with our strategic regional partners; and coordinating interdisciplinary educational opportunities across the University. The key deliverables of the successful candidate are Leadership of the water center (60%), research (20%), and teaching (20%). The tenure home of the Director will be determined in consultation with the successful candidate and the relevant department.
Minimum Qualifications: PhD degree and at least 7 years of experience in an academic, government, or industrial research position. Candidates with degrees in the areas of engineering, science, design, health, policy, planning or related field will be considered. The successful candidate must have demonstrated leadership capabilities, outstanding publications, and an external funding record in water research. The candidate’s area of research may address any aspect of water science, engineering, planning, design, health, policy, etc.
