Job Overview/Summary:

The NRGI Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning team is responsible for helping NRGI track, assess and improve its results. It does so by creating systems and frameworks for data collection across the organization, analyzing data, conducting and commissioning evaluations, and by creating opportunities for learning and reflection across the organization.

NRGI seeks to hire a temporary consultant to provide temporary assistance to the Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL) team.  The junior consultant will work under the supervision of the NY based MEL Officer to compile a list of results and to document “lessons learned” from NRGI global programming since 2014. These lists will be important building blocks for an upcoming organizational evaluation and will also be used by the MEL team to assess and analyze NRGI’s results so far.

The work will involve mining various organizational documents for relevant narrative data, organizing the data in a systematic and simple way, and editing the narrative data compiled. We expect the outcome of this work will be a well-structured google sheet or excel document presenting the full range of results stories and lessons learned found in the documents reviewed, as well as a comprehensive categorization of those stories.


Desk review of programming results and lessons learned:

  • Review several (100+) internal NRGI documents (reports, assessments, internal communications material, grantee narratives, etc.) to identify ‘outcomes’, or ‘results’ from NRGI’s work;
  • Create an outcome and lesson learned database; ensuring that each outcome or lesson learned is only captured once;
  • Tag each outcome/lesson learned against relevant categories (theme, country, date, results type, etc.);
  • Ensure that outcomes that are related to each other (e.g. subcomponents of a single story) are linked together in the database;
  • Highlight any gaps in the data, as well as need for NRGI to follow up with relevant staff.

Edit outcome stories and lessons learned:

  • Edit narrative stories of each outcome to ensure consistency across stories;
  • Edit each lesson learned story to ensure relevant lesson is highlighted.

Develop outcome and lessons learned database:

  • Propose ways to improve and expand the basic database NRGI currently uses to capture and categorize outcome stories and lessons learned.

The responsibilities of this consultancy are subject to modifications as required by the needs of the organization.

Job Requirements:

Demonstrated Knowledge and Experience

  • Basic knowledge of monitoring, evaluation and learning essential
  • Demonstrated writing/editing skills including previous experience working with texts written by non-native English speakers.
  • Demonstrated time and project management skills
  • Demonstrated experience working remotely, flexibly and independently
  • Ability to work well under pressure, multitask and prioritize work assignments to meet deadlines
  • Great attention to detail: the ability to apply consistent standards

Skills and Abilities

  • 1-2 years previous experience working in monitoring, evaluation and learning desirable
  • Experience mining data desirable
  • Working knowledge of MS Excel
  • Native/Fluent English required.  Additional language skills a plus.
  • Interest or experience in resource governance desirable


  • Bachelor’s degree required; exceptions could be made for current undergraduate students under exceptional circumstances, only if they have demonstrable experience in international development/monitoring and evaluation and learning as well as strong references to confirm that experience
  • Enrollment in relevant graduate program desirable

Salary: to be determined based on candidate experience. Please note this is a junior role.

Working Environment:  Remote/flexible work, approximately 20 full days (8 hours per day)  between April-early June 2018. Preference for a candidate based in the NYC metro area.
