The Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) Research Councils UK Collective Fund is ‘one of the most ambitious international research programmes created; with £225 Million being invested across 37 interdisciplinary projects’ to address a range of world problems. The University of Southampton’s project: ‘Building Research Capacity for sustainable water and food security In drylands of sub-saharan Africa (BRECcIA) is proud to be part of this innovative research cohort. BRECcIA comprises 6 Universities located in 4 countries, and partnerships with 8 international organisations.
We have an exciting opportunity for experienced researchers from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds to join our team and to play a pivotal role in this ground-breaking project.
The University of Southampton seeks an experienced candidate in the areas of Earth Observation, crop classification, production and drivers of change for two years (renewable for up to one further year) research position. You will be part of the BRECcIA project team (partners based in Malawi, Kenya, Ghana and the UK) with post-docs from different disciplinary backgrounds.
You will have a PhD* (or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in Geography, Geomatics or a related discipline andskills in both estimation of biophysical variables from satellite data, use of Earth observation data for crop classification and crop yield modelling, time series data analysis techniques and modelling. You will design and carry out field-based projects, to work closely with Southampton scientists and social scientists, to write research reports, and to liaise with African researchers and PhD and will undertake research on mapping and monitoring agricultural production in sub Saharan Africa using Earth observation data and identify the drivers responsible for increase/decrease in agriculture production at local scale.
* Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
You have field experience in rural areas, preferably in topics related to those outlined above. Previous experience in sub-Saharan Africa would be advantageous. You will be expected to travel internationally for the project.
