The Sustainable Cities Institute program (SCI) at the National League of Cities seeks a new senior associate to join the team, contributing to our mission of catalyzing and supporting city-led sustainability efforts. The role requires work across all SCI initiatives including water management, energy efficiency, leadership development, research, and more. A successful candidate will be responsible for coordinating with staff and elected officials to generate research, offer technical assistance, plan local workshops, organize public engagement meetings, or other events. In addition to these general responsibilities, the position is the primary point of contact for the Leadership in Community Resilience Program. ‘Resilience’ has increasingly been embraced as a holistic, pro-active framework to reduce risk and improve organizational performance within both the private sector and in all levels of government. This program is currently working with a cohort of 7 cities and towns who will accelerate the application of new tools and practices and serve as examples for other communities around the country prioritize efforts to improve their resilience. The scope includes environmental, economic, social, and governance issues, while paying special attention to challenges facing low-moderate income populations and traditionally under-served neighborhoods.
Note: This is a 2 year grant funded position. After the 2-year period there is potential, but no guarantee, for additional employment funding.
This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities, but does serve as a coach and mentor for other positions in the department.
This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as laptop computers and smartphones.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. This is largely a sedentary role; however, some filing is required. This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand on a stool as necessary.
Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. This position regularly requires long hours and occasional weekend work as job duties demand.
Moderate travel required (approximately 15%) to attend resilience events, conferences and NLC meetings.
Preferred Education and Experience
- A Bachelor’s degree required.
- Graduate degree in urban planning, community development, sustainability, environmental management, or related field preferred.
- Minimum 3 years of relevant work experience in relevant fields such as resilience, sustainability, technical assistance, public engagement or capacity building. Experience working with city officials, local sustainability staff, civic organizations, or membership organization preferred.
