Mott MacDonald is currently seeking a Senior Climate Change Adaptation Specialist to join our very busy International Development Services (IDS) Team in Cambridge, UK, serving the water and environment sectors. The specialist will have strong business acumen and will contribute to: the leadership of the Environmental Management and Climate Change (EMCC) portfolio; the acquisition of new projects as part of the EMCC team in IDS; managing and directing ongoing and new projects; and providing short-term technical inputs. At Mott MacDonald, projects are directed in accordance with our ISO 9001 compliant procedures which include financial and technical progress, quality of delivery, staffing issues and client liaison. The Specialist will proactively pursue opportunities, maintain good relations with relevant international financial institutions and partner organisations and direct the preparation of proposals. He or she will also actively support the sharing of knowledge and experience in EMCC, and be mentor for junior colleagues.
The position will be based in Cambridge but will require frequent short term travel to Europe, Asia and Africa. The work will cover environmental and climate aspects of water resources, irrigation, water supply and sanitation, and wetlands projects, and potentially forestry. The role will provide an excellent opportunity for an ambitious individual to develop and manage a portfolio of work in climate resilience and related sectors, in a supportive environment fully committed to international development. Current activities include, for example, research into climate resilience in Nepal, project preparation for climate-resilient agricultural development in Myanmar, management of the Berbak Green Prosperity Partnership in Indonesia, and a Global Study on Climate Resilient Water Supply and Sanitation. Specific tasks will include:
Technical leadership in preparing proposals for and delivering the climate resilience elements of projects, including managing the inputs of others, setting and managing budgets, leading to development of a growing portfolio of work
Management of, and technical inputs into, project work, covering both ongoing and newly acquired projects
Working in multi-disciplinary teams which may be spread between offices and countries, with colleagues from both Mott MacDonald and partner organisations
Contributing to thought leadership through scientific and technical papers and presentations for internal and external audiences, and active participation in our professional excellence programmes
Contributing to the continuous improvement of our own sustainability performance
You will have:
At least a master’s degree in Environmental Sciences, Climate Studies or related subject.
Significant experience in the design, implementation and management of international development projects in the field of environmental management and climate resilience.
Experience in national or regional water resources management, development of climate change strategies and adaptation policies; institutional strengthening of environmental and related agencies.
Experience in reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD+) will be an advantage
Excellent understanding of concepts of resilience and of the inter-relationship between climate resilience and international development
track record of innovative and strategic thinking demonstrated through scientific and technical publications
Experience in business development, gathering market intelligence and proposal management/writing.
experience in managing projects and budgets
Demonstrated ability to work in teams and communicate effectively in a multi-cultural environment.
Ability to work under tight deadlines and demonstrate strong time-management skills.
Excellent written and spoken English language skills, with proficiency in other languages being an advantage.
Good skills in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, MS Project and Outlook).
