American Rivers seeks law interns that will work under the supervision of the General Counsel in the Legal Department. This program provides an excellent opportunity to gain direct experience dealing with the legal issues of a national nonprofit environmental organization, including contracts, government grants and agreements, ethics, employment law, conflict of interest, non-profit corporate governance and tax compliance, corporate sponsorship, and charitable solicitation regulation. Though the student may also have the opportunity to carry out some research and writing in environmental law, this internship focuses mainly on transactional work.
The intern will be given a variety of short-term and long-term projects, including research and writing assignments in the form of legal briefs, informal research memos, and quick verbal summaries.
- The ideal candidate for this internship is personable, detail-oriented, and possesses a sense of urgency.
- Strong technical writing skills and the ability to explain legal concepts to people without legal training is a must.
- Must be a current J.D. candidate or recent J.D. graduate.
TIME COMMITMENT AND PAY:
American Rivers’ summer 2018 legal internships will begin in mid-May and last for 10 weeks, ending around the first week of August. We request a minimum commitment of 20 hours per week. Internships are unpaid; however, a travel subsidy of $5 per day is available to help offset the costs of the intern’s commute. In addition to the travel subsidy, where available we will work with the intern to gain school credit.
Please submit a cover letter and resume to [email protected] with Legal Intern in the subject line. Applications will be reviewed as they are received. No phone calls please.
