The Executive Director is responsible for implementation of polices set by the Board of Directors and as set forth in the SAWA By-laws. The Executive Director oversees an organization with in excess of 40 full, part-time and seasonal employees. The Executive Director directs and advises the managers of three operational departments and administrative management for the Association. Guidance and direction is provided by the Chair of the Executive Board.


Developing and implementing the Executive, Regular Board, and Committee agendas which include action items requiring Board approval.
Develop policies and procedures to provide guidance to SAWA employees in carrying out their responsibilities.
Working with Department managers develop and oversee implementation of annual business plans for each operational department.
Responsible for carrying out SAWA’s financial policies, assuring good stewardship of financial resources so that funds can be used most effectively in carrying out its mission. This includes developing an annual budget and assuring that the organization adheres to budget policies and fiscal authorization.
Periodically report to the board on the financial status of SAWA.
Develop annual cash flow plans assuring invested funds are used only when needed to cover restricted mitigation expenses and overhead.
Responsible for providing information, advice, and counsel to the Chairperson of the Board, Committees, and the Board of Directors in the creation of policies, programs, and strategic direction of the Association.
Represents SAWA at regional natural resource conservation meetings. Advocates SAWA interests and seeks funding for SAWA projects from federal, state and regional regulatory agencies.
Responsible for support of all activities associated with the Board of Directors, including staffing for all Board and Committee meetings, meeting schedules, locations, development of agenda, and meeting materials.
Oversees the human resources as it relates to hiring and disciplining employees, annual performance evaluation process and developing appropriate employee compensation and benefit levels subject to Board approval. Evaluates the performance of four managers who report to Executive Director.
Responsible for overseeing filing of annual regulatory reports to federal, state and local government agencies.
Oversee and perform quality control of biological and habitat restoration services performed by SAWA for contracting third parties or in fulfilling SAWA mitigation requirements.
Solicit new third party services contracts in carrying out SAWA’s mission to improve the native plant and wildlife habitat. Respond to RFP’s and develop competitive proposals in seeking new business.
Provide quality and cost effective services to SAWA member agencies.
Working with SAWA general counsel develops and implement service contracts.

Basic Requirements:

Background in natural resources business management or other related fields. Experience in a nonprofit conservation or land management organization would be beneficial. Experience in soliciting and managing third party service contracts, would be a plus.
Knowledge of current trends in conservation, land management and natural resource conservation and experience in applying this knowledge to conservation projects.
Experience with grant writing and project management and the ability to work under frequent deadlines.
Strong computer skills and requires experience in the use Word, Excel, and PowerPoint software. Knowledge of QuickBooks, a plus.
Medical examination and criminal background check will be required.

Educational Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in business management, finance, project management or related field. A master’s degree is preferred. Degrees in the biological and environmental sciences are acceptable when accompanied with 5 years of management experience.

Salary and Benefits:

Salary range is $84,000.00 to $120,000.00
Benefits include SAWA contribution of 6% into a 403 b Investment Plan. Eleven paid holidays each year, 3 weeks paid vacation each year and 7 days sick leave per year. $600 per month paid towards cafeteria benefits such as medical, dental, etc.
