Org. Setting and Reporting
The United Nations Environment (UN Environment) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. UN Environment's Policy and Programme Division consolidates the policy, programme, monitoring, gender and social safeguards functions of UN Environment as well as its engagement with the United Nations system and key global processes such as the 2030 Agenda. The Division ensures coherence and coordination at the strategic, policy and programmatic levels.

The internship is located in various policy and programme Division offices based in Nairobi. Please specify in your cover letter the thematic area you would like to take up your internship along with a second preference (if applicable).

The UN Environment/Policy and Programme Division internship is for six (6) months. 

The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.

Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities
Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background; the office to which the intern is assigned to; the nature of specific area and the internship duration. Duties may include, but not limited to:

1)Conduct research in the thematic priority areas that is determined jointly by the supervisor and the intern 
2)Support the preparation of briefing, information material and presentations.
3)Analyze reports, surveys results and briefs to extract key messages and develop summaries
4)Assist with the organization of meetings, workshops seminars, webinars and other similar activities, supporting with the preparation of agendas, co-drafting background materials, meeting reports, assist with ad hoc meetings and prepare meeting minutes if required
5)Support programme development and implementation by gathering relevant information and data
6)Helping with the editing of additional website content information
7)Providing a day-to-day support to the activities of the office

Education
Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);
c. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

Be computer literate in standard software applications.

Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; 

Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience
Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.

Languages
Fluency in one of the working languages of the UN Secretariat, English or French, (both oral and written) is required; knowledge of the other is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage
