The United Nations Environment Programme (UN Environment) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. UN Environment is the United Nations system’s designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level.
UN Environment’s Asia and the Pacific Office works in 41 countries across the region to promote and implement sustainable development solutions. It works in close partnership with key stakeholders including governments, the private sector, civil society, and other UN agencies. UN Environments Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific helps to implement all UN Environment’s programmes and projects in the region by initiating, coordinating and catalyzing regional and sub-regional cooperation and action in response to environmental problems and emergencies.
UN Environment Private Sector and Sustainability Research Internship is for 6 months.
The Private Sector and Sustainability Research Intern will work under the direct supervision of the Deputy Regional Director of UN Environment Asia and the Pacific Office.
Living and working conditions at duty station
Normal living conditions for a capital city in a middle-income country in Asia.
Please note the internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (40 hours). Flexible working arrangements can be agreed with the supervisor as appropriate and needed.
Under the supervision of the Deputy Regional Director, the Private Sector and Sustainability Research Intern will:
-Map various current and potential engagement with private sector partners of the Regional Office projects and establish a database for monitoring and informing strategic engagement, communications and developing as well as maintaining good relationship..
-Perform research and analysis of status and sustainability trends of current and potential private sector partners, to inform staff of the Regional Office of the opportunities for improving relationship management.
-Design and produce communications materials to promote private sector partnerships, and to support joint activities.
-Perform other duties as required.
-Considers all those to whom services are provided to be “clients ” and seeks to see things from clients’ point of view
-Establishes and maintains productive partnerships with clients by gaining their trust and respect
-Identifies clients’ needs and matches them to appropriate solutions
-Monitors ongoing developments inside and outside the clients’ environment to keep informed and anticipate problems
-Keeps clients informed of progress or setbacks in projects
-Meets timeline for delivery of products or services to client
Communication: Clear and effective verbal and written communication of policy issues; listens to others, correctly interprets messages and responds appropriately; asks questions for clarification and exhibits interest in having two-way communication; demonstrates openness in sharing information and keeping people informed. Ability to design communications materials and promote on-line.
Teamwork: Works collaboratively with colleagues to achieve organizational goals; solicits input by genuinely valuing others’ ideas and expertise; willing to learn from others; places office agenda before personal agenda
Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
– Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
– Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);preferably, enrolled in an advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) with a focus on business, marketing, sustainability or international environmental relations.
– Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.
– Be computer literate in standard software applications.
– Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;
– Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.. However, experience in analysing and writing policy documents related to business, environment and sustainability issues, with particular attention to the private sector, and combining information derived different sources, is desirable.
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in oral and written English is essential. Knowledge of another UN language or an Asian language is an asset.
