The Credit Valley Conservation Authority (CVC) is a partnership of the municipalities within the Credit River Watershed. At this time, we are seeking to fill the position of: Engineer, Water and Climate Change Science

SUMMARY OF FUNCTIONS

CVC’s Water and Climate Change Science Team has a strong history and demonstrated leadership role in water resource management in Ontario.  While this team is dynamic and fast paced, its culture is relaxed and respectful, teamwork is evident and valued, diversity is welcomed and encouraged, and healthy living is promoted and supported through compressed work schedules and flexible hours.   Everyone in the CVC Water and Climate Change Science Team is enthusiastic about what they do and it shows through the variety and success of the projects and programs they implement in collaboration with local and regional municipalities, and community partners!  The Water and Climate Change Science Team is currently seeking an Engineer, Water and Climate Change Sciences for the team.

The successful candidate will work with the team to deliver the objectives of the Water and Climate Change Science & Knowledge Transfer Program. Specifically, the candidate will direct research and lead projects that promote and support watershed protection and risk reduction in light of climate change. In addition, the candidate will be responsible for personnel development, working in collaboration with other departments and external partners, securing program funding, and assisting with achieving the goals of CVC’s Strategic Plan.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

  • Post-secondary education in Engineering or related field
  • Minimum 5 years of experience related to the major tasks
  • Registered with Professional Engineers in Ontario as an EIT or P.Eng.
  • Experience supervising staff
  • Strong technical, analytical and organizational skills.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills to convey technical data in reports, guidance documents and oral presentations
  • Knowledge of design, policies and procedures related to climate change, stormwater and watershed management (e.g. Stormwater Management (SWM) design manual, municipal design standards, bylaws, official plans and current practices for municipalities across Canada)
  • Understand climate change science as it relates to water resource management
  • Experience in risk and asset management
  • Strong computer skills in word processing (Word), spreadsheets (Excel), and database management (Access)
  • Strong Multi-tasking and project management and program coordination skills including workplan development, project and budget tracking
  • Demonstrated ability in team leadership, staff development and client relations
  • Well organized, a strategic thinker and the ability to make effective decisions
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with demonstrated ability to build strong relationships.

SUMMARY OF MAJOR TASKS

Perform the following tasks under limited direction:

  • Manage the development and delivery of the water, risk and climate change science research initiatives to meet department and CVC strategic goals.
  • Develop and enhance the understanding of the water, risk and climate change science within the CVC jurisdiction.
  • Provide leadership in and manage the development of Authority objectives, policies, procedures, guidelines, and programs for water, risk and climate change science.
  • Maintain state-of-the-art knowledge in overall, risk and asset management, and climate change as it relates to water resource management.
  • Review and update of watershed models including calibration and model output and work collaboratively with consultants to revise and update model.
  • Development of technical tools, reports, case studies and/or guidance documents this includes disseminating products for review to technical advisory committees for comments and incorporates feedback in to final reports.
  • Provide project management, including project design, work plan development, budget preparation, and cost-accounting.
  • Supervise and provide leadership to staff, directing work, providing technical expertise, and reviewing performance on a day-to-day basis
  • Prepare Requests for Proposals, prepare grant applications, and manage consultants
  • Develop and maintain effective partnerships and client relations with municipal, provincial and federal government staff, other agencies/groups, consultants, academics, utilities, finance sector and the general public.
  • Undertake research that documents practical applications of integrated water resource management through literature reviews, interviews and consultation webinars and workshops.
  • Develop plain language reports tailored for target audiences such as commissioners, municipal staff, planners, engineers, utilities, etc.
  • Other duties and projects as appropriate to the position.
