The purpose of the “Amazon Indigenous Rights and Resources (AIRR)” Activity (henceforth “the Activity”) is to improve representation of indigenous peoples in governance of Amazon forests and waters so that they may contribute to the conservation of biodiversity and prevention of land-based greenhouse gas emissions in and around their lands. This Activity is part of USAID’s Amazon Regional Environment Program (AREP). The Activity has the following four objectives: 1. Select indigenous groups have strengthened capacity and skills to advocate for their rights and negotiate their interests in regards to large-scale infrastructure and extractives activities; 2. Mandatory and voluntary best practices for infrastructure and extractives activities that benefit selected indigenous groups implemented and scaled; 3. Selected indigenous groups are effectively monitoring and evaluating large-scale infrastructure and extractives activities; and 4. Indigenous strategic planning and priorities are mainstreamed into regional and national planning and governance.
