The United Nations Environment Programme (UN Environment) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The UN Environment – Regional Office for West Asia, established in Manama, Bahrain, is one of the UN Environment’s six regional offices. It coordinates UN Environment’s Programme of Work in West Asia, providing the link between UN Environment’s Divisions and the countries of the region. Hence, the West Asia Office’s main objective is to develop relevant programmes to respond to the needs of the region, with a focus on enabling member states to achieve their visions for sustainable development.

The West Asia Office will offer the opportunity to the intern to learn and experience of how regional and international cooperation is utilized as a platform for solving global environment issues such as resource efficiency. The intern will have the opportunity to review technical documents, gather baseline data and perform data and information analysis. Through working closely with the programme officer, the intern will have the chance to interact with a wide range of stakeholders including the UN, governments, private sector and the academia.

The internship is UNPAID. Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background, the intern’s assigned office as well as the internship period.

Interns work 35-40 hours per week under the supervision of the officer to whom assigned.
Duty station: Manama, Bahrain. The internship is for three months.


Under the Supervision the Regional Resource Efficiency Programme Coordinator, the intern will:

1.Monitor and report on emerging resource efficiency issues concerning West Asia countries;
2.Update information, conduct basic research and analysis, prepare briefs and basic reports, stories for the media and UN Environment website on issues related to resource efficiency, sustainable consumption and production and sustainable economic development;
3.Support the development of a UN Environment West Asia Office menu of service lines in support of the resource efficiency programme;
4.Identifying linkages with similar programmes/projects in the region and opportunities to build new partnerships and promote synergy and cooperation;
5.Assist in the formulation of project proposals by compiling baseline information;
6.Assist in the preparation of workshops and meetings minutes;
7.Perform other duties as required.

•Support at least 2 countries with their transitioning to sustainable development through developing and adopting sustainable consumption and production policies, national action plans and all-inclusive sustainable economies.
•Support at least 2 countries and private sector stakeholders that implement sustainable consumption and production in the sectors of buildings and supply chain, tourism, life cycle approaches and sustainable food systems.
•Support the establishment of Green Universities Network, Arab Chapter, under the Global Universities Partnership on Environment for Sustainability initiative.

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);
c. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

environmental science, economics, business administration, engineering, international relations, law, or related

•Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme


English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in oral and written English and Arabic are required.
