The United Nations Environment Programme (UN Environment) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The UN Environment – Regional Office for West Asia, established in Manama, Bahrain, is one of the UN Environment’s six regional offices. It coordinates UN Environment’s Programme of Work in West Asia, providing the link between UN Environment’s Divisions and the countries of the region. Hence, the West Asia Office’s main objective is to develop relevant programmes to respond to the needs of the region, with a focus on enabling member states to achieve their visions for sustainable development.
The West Asia Office will offer the opportunity to the intern to learn and experience of how regional and international cooperation is utilized as a platform to solving global environment issues such as ecosystem and biodiversity. The intern will have the opportunity to review technical documents, gather baseline data and perform data and information analysis. Through working closely with the programme officer, the intern will have the chance to interact with a wide range of stakeholders including UN, governments, private sector and the academia.
The internship is UNPAID. Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background, the intern’s assigned office as well as the internship period.
Interns work 35-40 hours per week under the supervision of the officer to whom assigned.
Duty station: Manama, Bahrain. The internship is for three months.


Under the Supervision of Ecosystem Management team, the intern will:
1.Conduct research on selected aspects of programmes, operations and other activities, including data collection, analysis and presentation of data and information related to ecosystems and biodiversity;
2.Undertake research and provide inputs for the development of a series of stories to be used for the UN Environment website;
3.Assist in the preparation and finalization of various materials, including briefing notes, outreach materials, responding to letters and memos and other correspondences;
4.Support in practical and substantive organization of, in particular, meetings and workshops related to ecosystems and biodiversity;
5.Assist in research on the synergies, links, impacts and nexus between biodiversity and land issues, sustainable development goals, as well as Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs) with selected environmental themes such as land and climate change.
6.Identifying linkages with similar programmes/projects in the region and opportunities to build new partnerships and promote synergy and cooperation.
7.Assist in the implementation and development of materials for the communication outreach project for Ecosystem Based Management Communication Project in the West Asia region;
8.Support communication activities;
9.Support other activities in the Ecosystem and Biodiversity Programme and other Sub-programmes in the UN Environment Office for West Asia.

Expected outcomes:
In performing the above responsibilities, the UN Environment intern will add value to the work of the programme by making vital and creative contributions to the work. The intern will have an opportunity to learn and familiarize themselves, and enhance their knowledge on topics of interest to them, working for an intergovernmental agency. The internship will contribute to capacity building, education, and on the job training

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);
c. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

Preferred area of study
Studies in environment, political science, international development, or law.

•Be computer literate in standard software applications.

•Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;

•Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.


English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in oral and written English and Arabic are required.
