Actual Media Inc., the publisher of leading business magazines and producer of major industry events in the water, infrastructure and environment sectors seeks a paid audience engagement intern for a four-month term from Feb. 15, 2018 to June 15, 2018. This full-time, contract position in our Toronto office is an opportunity to gain valuable experience in the magazine industry, expand your knowledge of publishing systems and technology and develop your skills through on-the-job mentoring.

The publication and its website engage with the decision-makers who plan, finance, design, engineer, construct and manage of all types of infrastructure assets. ReNew Canada stands alone as a publication devoted to the national infrastructure industry, examining the planning, financing and lifecycle of public assets in all sectors.
Water Canada magazine focuses on resource management and protection, and covers drinking water, wastewater, water resources, stormwater, and conveyance and distribution in the context of environmental health, urban infrastructure, science and technology, law, policy and governance. Water Canada magazine differentiates itself from competitive publications in this field with a “one water” approach to our editorial, consistent with the preferred approach to water management. We examine the entire life cycle of water use from source to tap and back again.
In this position, you will:
Be an ambassador for Actual Media and connect with our audiences. You will help develop and administer a comprehensive readership survey for the two publications via direct mail, email and telephone. You will also be directly involved with the transition from our exiting customer relationship management (CRM) system to a new cloud-based and integrated subscriber, advertiser, event attendee database and audience engagement system. In addition, you will work closely with the editors and content manager to further enhance our print and digital reader and website user experiences.
The ideal candidate has university or college education in communications, marketing and/or publishing. You have a knack for circulation development, strong communication and computer skills, data management and reporting experience and are a ‘people person’ who can easily and positively engage with our many thousands of readers and clients by email, social media and phone. You can logically and intuitively determine the best marketing strategies (print, digital, online, etc.) to elevate audience engagement with our brands and content and know how to work collaboratively within a team of fun and dynamic personalities. You also have a strong work ethic and can work independently on core projects and tasks.
You will be perfect for this position if you have:

- A positive, can-do attitude. You are someone who can see solutions and opportunities where others may see only problems.
- Commitment to the job and a willingness to learn and adapt within a small media business.
- Post-secondary education in journalism, publishing, data management, sales or a related field.
- Minimum one year of practical media experience.
- Curiosity, willingness to learn and an interest in Canada’s water, infrastructure and environment
- Fluency in Microsoft Office, social networking sites and both PC and MAC operating systems.
What we offer:
Located in the heart of the vibrant Queen/Spadina neighbourhood, Actual Media is a people-first company with an open-concept office and friendly working environment. Compensation for the four-month contract is $11,000 ($1,375, less source deductions, paid every two weeks). If successful, the candidate will be offered a long-term, full-time position as Audience Engagement Manager with a larger annual salary, health and dental benefits, flex-time, generous holiday allotment and other benefits including ongoing professional development opportunities.
