Abt Associates Inc., a major American research, technical assistance, and international development company, seeks highly qualified technical specialists in the fields below for the anticipated USAID-funded Promotion of Best Social and Environmental Management Practices in the Amazon Region Activity. The project aims to reduce the negative impacts on Amazon forests and water resources from large scale infrastructure projects, extractive activities, and climate change by promoting environmental and social best practices that safeguard natural resources and indigenous rights and cultures in the Amazon region.

Social Advisor

  • Master’s degree in sociology or anthropology.
  • Minimum five years’ work experience in the Amazon region with indigenous communities, and vulnerable groups, including understanding their organizational structure and economic priorities.
  • Experience supporting indigenous communities and vulnerable groups in: (i) implementing of Social Best Management Practices (BMP) for infrastructure and extractive industries, and (ii) monitoring and enforcement of BMP implementation.
  • For positions based in Colombia and Peru: native or advanced Spanish language skills required.
  • For positions based in Brazil: native or advanced Portuguese language skills required.
  • For positions based in Guyana and Suriname: native English and Dutch, respectively.
  • Basic knowledge of English language required.
  • Candidates must already be based in the country of the position for which they are applying.

Private Sector Advisor

  • Master’s degree in relevant field.
  • Minimum five years’ work experience engaging with the private sector on large infrastructure projects in the Amazon region (for example, public private partnerships, concessions, build–operate–transfers (BOTs), etc.)
  • For positions based in Colombia and Peru: native or advanced Spanish language skills required.
  • For positions based in Brazil: native or advanced Portuguese language skills required.
  • For positions based in Guyana and Suriname: native English and Dutch, respectively.
  • Basic knowledge of English language required.
  • Candidates must already be based in the country of the position for which they are applying.

Environmental Advisor

  • Master’s degree in relevant field.
  • Minimum five years’ work experience in sustainable development and biodiversity conservation in the Amazon region.
  • Expertise with environmental assessment for roads, hydroelectric, oil, gas and/or large-scale mining in the Amazon region.
  • Knowledge of Environmental Best Management Practices for at least two of the four sectors above.
  • For positions based in Colombia and Peru: native or advanced Spanish language skills required.
  • For positions based in Brazil: native or advanced Portuguese language skills required.
  • For positions based in Guyana and Suriname: native English and Dutch, respectively.
  • Basic knowledge of English language required.
  • Candidates must already be based in the country of the position for which they are applying.
