Context of the Position
CBF organizes several large-scale restoration projects for volunteers in targeted watersheds each spring and fall. The Restoration Assistant will be responsible for pre-event preparation and post-event organization and data entry, and working with adult and family volunteers at restoration events.
Assisting with the Farm Stewardship Program at agricultural, reforestation, and riparian restoration events and workshops (throughout Maryland and over the state line in PA and WVA) by:
- Loading and transporting trees from CBF’s Clagett Farm Tree Nursery (in Upper Marlboro, MD) to the restoration sites using a truck and 14’trailer (training will be provided- experience is a plus)
- Loading and transporting equipment to the site (prior to event days)
- Marking holes for auguring (prior to event days), if necessary
- Placing tree shelters and mulching trees (if needed) on planting days
- Re-staking or removing/placing shelters on trees at previous planting sites
- Assist volunteers on event days (signing in, demonstrating planting and use of equipment)
- Assist Clagett Farm staff in maintaining tree nursery (weeding, watering, and organizing) AND organize volunteers
- Clean out and organize restoration storage areas at the Merrill Center and Holly Beach Farm
- Assist with post-event organization and entering volunteer data into tracking spreadsheets
- Work alongside service-learning groups visiting CBF on their spring break
Assisting with the Baltimore Harbor Initiative in Baltimore City by:
- Assisting volunteers at events at the Riggs Lot, CBF’s renovation project in the Bridgeview/Greenlawn Community
- Help lead oyster gardening cage cleaning at locations around Baltimore’s Inner Harbor
- Work with the Program Manager of the Healthy Harbor Initiative and Chesapeake Bay Foundation to keep track of and organize volunteer events during spring 2018 into summer 2018 season.
Professional Experience and Qualifications
Successful candidates should have a strong background and interest in ecology, biology, and environmental science, or related field; with a desire to pursue environmental restoration and/or natural resource management as a career. A combination of hands-on outdoor experience and education is a plus. The assistant will be required to work certain weekdays, weekends, and some evenings. Candidate MUST be available at least four days a week, all day and weekends. The assistant must be comfortable lifting at least 40lbs. In addition, candidate should be familiar with environmental issues and problems facing the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries, and be able to work with the general public and volunteers of all ages and backgrounds.
