Microsoft’s water stewardship strategy builds upon the work of other sustainability initiatives to achieve its water goals. We’ve been operating our datacenters and the rest of the company at 100 percent carbon neutrality since 2012.  We’ve achieved this progress by driving efficiencies, charging our business units a fee on carbon, and investing in sustainable energy projects and technologies.  When we’re not able to eliminate our energy use or directly power our operations with green energy, we purchase renewable energy and carbon offset certificates to offset our carbon emissions.

To support this, we are focused on increasing our understanding of water-related risks and impacts to our business and to the communities we serve, setting meaningful goals and improving our water efficiency, and advancing innovative solutions to water challenges

We’re looking for a skilled program manager to work with internal and external partners to guide and shape the execution of Microsoft’s water stewardship strategy. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of leading high-impact water-related projects at a global scale. She/he will need to work collaboratively with a wide variety of internal/external stakeholder groups.

 

Responsibilities

Understand water risk in the places where we operate

  • Drive cross company process to assess global water risks in the places we operate, leverage relevant tools (Aqueduct, Water Risk Monetizer, etc) and methodologies for identifying hot spots and developing actionable plans to address those risks
  • Develop plans with key stakeholder across the business to address identified water risks, including, but not limited to: 
    • Water availability 
    • Water quality 
    • Water infrastructure 
    • Extreme weather events 
    • Water basin health

Setting goals and improve our water use

  • Increase data collection quantity and quality across all operational groups, help quantify total cost of water 
  • Set goals with key stakeholder from across the business to manage water withdrawal, discharge, and quality 
  • Identify opportunities to design incentives and/or create company policies that help individuals to prioritize water performance 

Drive local engagement and stewardship

  • Establish criteria for prioritizing local engagement
  • Develop and/or support local engagement and stewardship plans which include, but are not limited to:  
    • Vulnerability assessment 
    • Source water protection 
    • NGO and community engagement 
  • Implement and validate local engagement and stewardship plans 
  • Identify and align with relevant water stewardship standards and best practices

Advance innovative solutions to water challenges

  • Identify opportunities for technology innovation (e.g., desiccant cooling, Kyoto wheels, cloud-based technologies) 
  • Establish demonstration pilot projects 
  • Share best practices and evaluate scalability 
  • Support engagements and opportunities where AI can help people/organizations monitor, model and manage critical water ecosystems

Facilitate communications, reporting and transparency

  • Ensure that Microsoft maintains and/or improves its performance through the CDP Water Disclosure process
  • Develop and manage a cross-company process for advancing water stewardship by working collaboratively to establish common objectives, alignment, governance and transparency.
  • Develop relevant communications that help the company showcase investments in both water stewardship and digital transformation
  • Represent Microsoft at key events and forums

 

Qualifications

Successful candidates will have:

  • Extensive work experience in corporate water management and stewardship
  • 5+ years of professional experience, specifically in water management, stewardship and environmental sustainability
  • Strong analytical skills with an ability to process large amounts of data to derive insights, find patterns and develop actionable plans
  • Proven track record of developing meaningful metrics/KPIs, and tracking/managing results against expectations
  • History of implementing corporate sustainability initiatives at global scale
  • Familiarity with key players in the water stewardship space (NGO, corporate, and government stakeholders)
  • Self-starter with an entrepreneurial drive to succeed in a quickly changing business environment
  • Strong project management skills involving large private and/or public organizations
  • Excellent written and verbal English communication skills
  • Capacity to work effectively on multiple concurrent projects
  • Ability to engage stakeholders effectively
