THE ORGANIZATION

TreePeople’s mission is to inspire the people of Los Angeles to take personal responsibility for the urban forest – educating, training and supporting them as they plant and care for trees and improve the neighborhoods in which they live, learn, work, and play. We work to help nature heal our cities in the neighborhoods, schools, communities and mountains of the greater Los Angeles area. Our office is located in Coldwater Canyon Park between the Los Angeles basin and the San Fernando Valley. TreePeople offices are located in seven all-weather yurts.

RESPONSIBILITIES

This position will include supporting existing research-policy department efforts by gathering information and up to date research for local water/urban canopy, assistance in creation or of potential legislative bills and analysis of existing water management efforts.

REPORTS TO

Technical Associate

DUTIES

  • Researching and writing about a range of subject areas including but not limited to: research on climate resilience, green infrastructure, urban forestry, and water resources management.
  • Attending trainings, meetings, special events and tree care events as needed.
  • Supporting other projects within the Research and Policy departments.
  • Assisting with GIS Mapping of political and environmental attributes throughout LA.

SKILLS REQUIRED

Friendly and confident with excellent communication skills (writing skills especially) and organizational ability. Ability to work well with a team. Knowledge of Microsoft Office including Excel, Word and PowerPoint. Prior policy or advocacy work, GIS skills and/or prior research experience a plus. Sense of humor appreciated.

TYPE OF POSITION

Part-time, unpaid summer internship.

TIMEFRAME

Flexible – 3- 4 months.
