Securing Water for and from Agriculture through Effective Community and Stakeholder Engagement
Arizona State University’s Morrison Institute in collaboration with the School of Human Evolution and Social Change are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to conduct social scientific research as part of a multi-million dollar, multi-institutional research project to assess the effectiveness of stakeholder engagement for addressing water quality and quantity concerns associated with agriculture. This project is supported by a grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture.
Responsibilities for the Research Associate include (1) administering the project, including managing research budgets, coordinating teams, and communicating with team members and stakeholders; (2) designing, conducting, and analyzing original quantitative and qualitative research in case study locations to examine the effects of stakeholder engagement on participants, their behaviors related to management practices, and outcomes for communities and environmental conditions; (3) preparing project reports and manuscripts for peer-reviewed publications and making academic and public presentations; and (4) assisting with long-term data management and archiving.
The initial appointment will be for one year, with the opportunity for renewal contingent on the availability of funding and satisfactory performance.
Applicants must have a PhD in a social science PhD in a social science (e.g., anthropology, geography, sustainability, natural resource management, rural sociology, etc.) completed by the start date. The ability to work both independently and in collaboration with others on a multi-disciplinary research team is crucial. Demonstrated expertise in both quantitative and qualitative research is required. Specific required research skills and experiences include intensive interviewing, survey design and administration. The candidate will also need to be flexible enough to travel to conduct research in multiple locations in Arizona. Excellent organizational and communication (oral and written) skills (including spoken/written English) are required. The ability to engage professionally with a diverse population of faculty, staff, and students across the university and community is required. Experience with large research projects preferred. Applicants should have demonstrated academic interests and experience publishing in one or more of the following topics: engagement and deliberation; science communication; democratic theory and practice; environmental implications of agriculture; community development; management of water resources; farmer decision-making and management; or other related fields.
The position is based in Morrison Institute, on ASU’s Downtown Phoenix Campus.

Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. This position is eligible for Arizona State University benefits.
