Uganda is currently hosting the third largest refugee population in Africa and with the ongoing conflict in South Sudan more people are seeking refuge in Uganda every day.

Malteser International has been working in Uganda since 1994, with projects in several regions of the country. In Northern Uganda and more specifically in the West Nile region, MI is active in the WASH sector in Rhino Camp, Imvepi, and Bidibidi for improving the lives of both the host population as well as the refugee population.

For its work in West Nile Region, Uganda, Malteser International is looking for a motivated

Water Engineer (national position)

Position Requirements and Responsibilities:

Ø Plan, monitor and control the overall construction activities in the refugee settlements and the implementation of Malteser International project activities

Ø Oversee and advise on planning and selection of suppliers, material, etc.

Ø Work in a team to provide leadership, direction, and assistance for extension workers and other staff

Ø Contribute to proposals and cost estimates

Ø Maintain good communications and working relations with other stakeholders, partner organizations and authorities

Ø Ensure that each portion of the work is executed according to an agreed upon Scope of Work, Design, Schedule and Budget to a best-in-class level of excellence

Ø Prepare and submit project Status Reports

Ø Conduct field inspections and site assessments, closely monitor construction progress

Ø Participate in emergency response activities as needed


Ø Master’s Degree in Water Engineering from a recognized university. Other degrees such as Civil or Environmental Engineering might also be considered, strong focus on water, hydraulics, etc.

Ø Minimum 3-5 years of progressive engineering, including project management experience

Ø Experience in WASH related humanitarian/development projects

Ø Experience in and willingness to work and live in a rural environment

Ø Valid Driving license (motorcycle)

Ø Fully computer literate (Microsoft Office) and good working knowledge of ITC technologies

Ø Fluency in English (written and spoken), and local languages (Lugbara, Kakwa, Arabic)

Personal Qualities:

Ø Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills, working with different groups, partners and nationalities

Ø Strong initiative and self-motivated, with a strong commitment to teamwork and humanitarian principle

Ø Ability to multitask and cope with competing demands under tight deadlines

Ø Ability to cope with high workload and stress and identify priority activities and assignments, and adjust priorities as required

Ø Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships in a multi-ethnic, multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary environment

Ø Politeness and helpfulness in dealing with visitors

Ø Good sense of humor

Ø Duty Station: Arua, Uganda

Ø Duration of contract: 12 months
