Water Quality Technician

General Description:

Studies the basic principles of water quality, stream ecology, and limnology and the effects of varying environmental and physical conditions such as temperature and nutrients. Studies the reactions of algae and other aquatic organisms to fluctuations in these variables. Has a general understanding of general ecological interactions and potential feedbacks with a focus on aquatic organisms. Has a general understanding of the linkages between land use and aquatic ecosystems. Will rely on experience and judgment to accomplish goals, with a certain degree of creativity and latitude expected. Will report to a supervisor. Will operate out of both the Ecosystems and Education Center Water Quality Research Laboratory (Langley, OK) and GRDA-NSU Scenic Rivers and Watershed Research Laboratory (Tahlequah, OK).

Essential Duties

  • Perform general laboratory duties and maintenance
  • Perform routine water sampling and monitoring
  • Perform aquatic organism sampling
  • Operate small watercraft
  • Analyze water and sediment samples
  • Operate of field and laboratory equipment
  • Data curation and entry
  • Provide input for reports

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree with 2-4 years of experience or equivalent graduate education

  • Knowledge of standard concepts, practices and procedures for water quality sampling and analysis
  • Ability to potentially operate, trailer, and tow watercraft
  • Skills in MS Office for data entry and report writing
  • Valid Driver’s license
  • Ability to swim 50 yards and lift 40 pounds

Desired Qualifications:

  • Coursework in chemistry, physics, and biology
  • Prior experience in designing and carrying out research projects
  • Prior laboratory experience especially with chemistry and/or molecular techniques
  • Prior field experience
  • Prior boating experience
  • Prior experience with data entry and curation and entry level statistics
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a teammate and take direction
  • Strong writing ability
