Senior Freshwater Scientist

Auckland Council

Auckland, New Zealand 🇳🇿

The Research and Evaluation Unit (RIMU) is Auckland Council’s environmental, social, economic and cultural research centre. We collect and communicate high-quality evidence to assist policy development, implementation and evaluation; decisions that ultimately affect the 1.5 million residents across Auckland’s 5,600 square km. Our core purpose is to capture, analyse and share a complex range of data and information that is essential for sound decision making on Auckland’s future.

The Environment team in the Unit provides the data needed to evaluate our region’s environment, describe its state and trends over time and identify and address knowledge gaps to improve our understanding of environmental systems and the effects of resource management decisions.  We do this by maintaining our longitudinal data set across marine, freshwater, land and air domains and undertaking research projects, often in collaboration with other management agencies and research institutes.

Are you a freshwater researcher or scientist with great analytical and reporting skills? Can you communicate and translate science effectively to a variety of audiences? Do you want to be part of a dedicated team who monitor changes and develop new research programmes to support and enhance our environmental data sets, underpin decision making and evaluate policy effectiveness?  Then this could be the team for you.

We are looking for an experienced senior freshwater scientist to develop RIMU support and deliver the freshwater monitoring and research programme.  Ideally this experience will include a strong background in research as well as a proven ability to work in an applied environment.  Experience and a sound knowledge of freshwater policy would also be advantageous.

The role requires an ability to influence, collaborate and work innovatively and strategically across a number of environmental fields. It is critical you have a recognised ability to disseminate and communicate complex environmental data to better inform decision-makers and activities in the region.

Excellent leadership and mentoring skills are also a necessity in this role, and effective project management experience is desirable.

The position requires a PhD level qualification or extensive experience in, freshwater (quality, quantity or ecology) or applied environmental science /resource management.  A specialisation in water quality management will be advantageous.

Be part of how we do the right thing and deliver a positive environmental legacy.

Whakamaua kia tina! Be the how!
