Background & Rationale

The SDG on Water has a new focus on Safely Managed services. Water safety and availability of water when needed, are two key indicators of the new SDG. Water safety programming and sustainable service models are  therefore a key component of the new global UNICEF WASH strategy.  The WASH section in Headquarters  is committed to support country offices in accompanying governments in developing sustainable service model for water delivery and in addressing the challenge   of water safety, at sector level, local level and at community level. In order to support these efforts headquarters are developing global policy notes, strategic and programmatic guidance,, training tools, and are planning to facilitate knowledge sharing and innovation among country offices.

Purpose

The purpose of this consultancy is to support knowledge management activities in three key areas of work conducted by the Water Team.  The areas of work are water safety programming – including community led- water safety planning community, sustainable service models – including the water value chain framework and Private Public partnership models,   and the global action research on water PPP in rural areas. 

The consultant will primarily be responsible for supporting specific conversations on  the online community of practice, for  supporting webinars development and documentation,  for preparing knowledge packages for conferences and other events, and for first drafting and editing of  guidance notes and training packages.

Expected results: (measurable results)

Water Safety Programming:

  1. Contribute to the development of outline and drafting of guidance notes on community led water safety programming.
  2. Contribute to development of a dissemination plan for the Arsenic Guidance note
  3. Support the editing of UNICEF’s accountability on Water quality/safety
  4. Support webinars series on water safety programming, including drafting content, developing PowerPoint presentations, liaising with countries, and preparing and disseminating post webinar documentation.
  5. Contribute to the facilitation of the conversation on “water safety “in the online Water community of practice (proposed three month cycles).
  6. Liaise with graphic designer, translators and printers on the design of guidance notes.
  7. Support the development of presentations and other materials for conferences and public events (WEDC, UNC, Africa water day, etc.)
  8. Update the system that tracks ad-hoc country technical assistance and country engagement in the area of water safety.

Water Value Chain and Sustainable Service Models:

  1. Contribute to editing of concept note on value chain and service management models.
  2. Support webinars series on value chain and service management models, including drafting content, developing PowerPoint presentations, liaising with countries, and preparing and disseminating post webinar documentation.
  3. Contribute to the facilitation of the conversation on “water value chain and service management models” in the online Water community of practice (proposed three monthly cycles).
  4. Support the development of presentations and other materials for conferences and public events (WEDC, UNC, Africa water day, etc.)

Action Research on Sustainable PPP Models in rural areas:

  1. Contribute to the editing of the interim lessons learned document written by the senior consultant on the Action research.
  2. Support the development, editing, translation, printing and uploading of monthly snapshot updates.
  3. Track follow -up actions agreed in global coordination meeting
  4. Contribute to the development a standard slide deck to be used at conferences and meetings.
  5. Support webinar, including drafting content, developing PowerPoint presentations, liaising with countries, and preparing and disseminating post webinar documentation.

Duty Station

The consultant will be based at NYHQ and provided with a laptop. 

Timeframe

Start date:   12 June 2017                      End date: 31 May 2018    

Key competences, technical background, and experience required Deadline

  • Bachelor degree in relevant field such as the social sciences, business, development, environmental science or hydrology.
  • 2 years of relevant work experience in WASH, development, sustainability, business, marketing or knowledge management.
  • Fluent in English, both spoken and written.  A second UN language is desirable.
  • Previous experience with UNICEF or other UN Agency.
