Program Coordinator

We are looking for a person to coordinate USU’s Water Quality Extension’s youth and teacher education outreach programs. We seek a person with a strong background in water quality, sustainability and natural resources with an educational background or experience in informal education.

  1. Oversee the water quality extension program office and activities.
  2. Manage the youth education program (youth outreach and teacher training). This would include maintaining existing programs, and developing new materials and programs as the need arises.
  3. Assist in development of other water quality and watershed related materials and programs.
  4. Provide assistance with field work and data analysis as needed.

The program is housed in the Watershed Sciences Department of Utah State University. Overall leadership is provided by the Water Quality Extension Specialist for Utah State University. The office is staffed by the program coordinator, 1 to 4 student or hourly employees, and graduate students in the program.

Utah State University’s Water Quality Extension program provides materials and programs that help the general public understand the linkage between their land uses and activities and potential impacts to water quality. The program has several major elements: Youth education, including direct program delivery, teacher training and curriculum development; outreach and technical support for urban and rural watershed groups; monitoring and assessment. We work through county extension offices but also directly with diverse audiences including teachers, municipal planners and resource agencies.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Demonstrated written and oral communication skills.
  2. Demonstrated ability to work as a team member and a team leader.
  3. Experience with spreadsheets and word processing software.
  4. Good organizational skills, ability to work independently, and ability to manage multiple projects.
  5. Willingness to travel within Utah, to work occasional weekends or evenings.
  6. Driver’s license or access to reliable transportation.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Knowledge of watershed and water quality issues in the intermountain west.
  2. Teaching or outreach education experience.
  3. Office management experience.
  4. Competence in Photoshop, Access or other databases, and Web development software.
  5. Experience in GIS and GPS technology.
  6. Water chemistry or related laboratory experience.
  7. Water quality monitoring experience.
  8. Experience with coordinating volunteer programs.
  9. Mechanical skills.

To be considered at the Program Coordinator I level:

4 years of experience in water quality or related discipline OR; a minor in a watershed or water quality related field plus 2 years OR; a bachelor’s degree in a watershed or water quality related field.
