Position Summary:

Manages the Villanova Urban Stormwater Partnership (VUSP) Water Quality Laboratory. Performs a variety of research tasks in the context of the study of Urban Stormwater Management. Duties to include overseeing and performing laboratory analysis, training and supervising the student work force, maintenance of laboratory instrumentation, and prepping storm event sampling. The position is responsible for laboratory budgeting and planning for support of research grants.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Supervision of storm event preparation, laboratory testing, and lab equipment maintenance/operation.
  • Lead Safety Officer for Laboratory.
  • Laboratory management in terms of purchasing, budgeting, and planning future purchases.
  • Hiring and supervising the student workforce a. Supervising and training of graduate and undergraduate researchers for general testing, b. Coordinating the schedules and delegating duties to the undergraduates and graduates.
  • Editing and reviewing the QAPP, writing and editing SOPs, creating and maintaining organizational paperwork for samples and quality controls.
  • Maintaining and improving data management and storage.
  • Analyzing data to check for accuracy and improve methods for better results.
  • Assisting in the organizational needs of VUSP, including leading the organizing of events and tours on campus as well as assisting in all other VUSP outreach needs.
  • Perform additional duties and assist with projects as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in chemistry, environmental science, engineering or biology.
  • Experience with environmental/chemistry laboratory operations and analytical equipment.
  • One year related experience required.
  • Ability to communicate in written and verbal form.
  • Previous supervisory experience.
  • Experience with operation and routine maintenance of analytical equipment used for measuring metals and nutrients in water (i.e. graphite furnace & flame atomic absorption spectrometer and discrete analyzers) is desirable.

Physical Requirements and/or Unusual Work Hours:

Physical Requirements and/or Unusual Work Hours: Outdoor field sites during rain events. Exposure to certain hazardous chemicals and at times to strong magnetic field. Water quality laboratory equipment. Minor lifting required.
