The Water Systems Research Group within the department of Biological Systems Engineering at Virginia Tech is seeking a postdoctoral research associate in the area of water resource engineering beginning in either Summer or Fall of 2017. The postdoc will be advised by Dr. Julie Shortridge, an assistant professor and extension specialist, and have the opportunity to interact with other faculty involved in interdisciplinary water research across the university.
The Water Systems Research Group aims to improve our understanding and management of water resources through the use of systems engineering methodologies, such as risk and decision analysis, machine learning, and statistical modeling. We aim to combine simulation-based assessments with robust risk and decision frameworks to inform planning in complex systems with natural, engineered, and human components. Current areas of research include climate change adaptation under deep uncertainty, predictive modeling of water demand, and climate risk management in water resource and agricultural systems. The candidate will be expected to contribute to the leadership of ongoing projects and will also have the opportunity to initiate new work based on their own unique background and expertise.
This position will provide an excellent opportunity for the candidate to apply a variety of modeling and analytical skills to compelling problems in water resource management, publish first-author publications, and present their findings at scientific meetings. They will also gain experience in developing and writing research proposals for external funding. The postdoc won’t have any teaching responsibilities, but will be expected to assist in the supervision of graduate and undergraduate research assistants.
|Required Qualifications:|| |
The candidate must have a Ph.D. degree in Biological, Environmental, Civil, Agricultural, or Systems/Industrial Engineering or a related discipline. Excellent communication skills. Proficiency in statistical computing with R. Educational or research experience in probabilistic risk assessment, decision analysis, simulation, machine-learning, statistical modeling and/or uncertainty analysis. Interests in water resources planning and management, climate change adaptation, and/or sustainability.
|Preferred Qualifications:|| |
Track record of peer-reviewed scientific publications and conference presentations. Experience with hydrologic or water resource models (e.g., SWAT, WEAP, etc.). Strong computing/programming background (e.g. Python, Visual Basic, SQL, etc.). Good organizational and interpersonal skills, experience working on research teams.
