Stroud Water Research Center is searching for a stream and river ecosystem ecologist to be hired at the assistant or associate research scientist rank, with expertise in systems approaches to understanding biological, chemical, and hydrodynamic processes in streams, rivers, and their watersheds. The individual will establish a permanent stream and river ecosystem science and modeling research program that is focused on understanding dynamics of water, nutrients, energy, and pollutants in stream ecosystems. The preferred candidate will be a broad thinker and have expertise and demonstrated use in applying mathematical modeling approaches to answer questions that advance knowledge and theory of freshwater systems ecology.
We prefer candidates who have at least one year postdoctoral research experience and a Ph.D. relating to any of the core disciplines of ecology, environmental chemistry/biogeochemistry, biology, hydrology, or environmental engineering. The ideal candidate should (1) have core competencies in stream ecology, biogeochemistry, physical environmental sciences (e.g., hydrology, fluvial geomorphology, hydrodynamics), and/or mathematical modeling; (2) possess a strong basic and theoretical understanding of ecosystem ecology and freshwater science and be able to integrate bio-, geo-, and hydrological sciences; (3) possess a strong publication record; (4) be able to secure external funding for research in their primary discipline; (5) have a proven ability to work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team; (6) be knowledgeable about the emerging technologies within their discipline.
This is a senior-level research scientist position with expectations for strong grantsmanship, lab management, management of technical staff, data analysis/modeling, and peer-reviewed publications in scientific literature. The successful candidate is expected to build and manage a science section that may include technical staff, graduate students, and postdoctoral candidates. The Stroud Center currently offers rich collaborative opportunities for measuring, monitoring, and modeling biogeochemical and biological processes or building large scale, spatially explicit models that incorporate aspects of physical and/or biological processes in streams/rivers/watersheds. Experience with environmental sensor networks or incorporating watershed-scale, high temporal and spatial resolution data from in-situ devices to build predictive models is also a plus. Opportunities to work with long-term (30–40 years) environmental monitoring data are also available. The successful candidate will be expected to both lead and work collaboratively on projects with other Stroud Center scientists, environmental educators, and watershed restoration professionals, as well as with external partners and colleagues as needed to derive a successful research program.
