The Environment and Natural Resources Division helps federal and state agencies address complex policy, management, and regulatory challenges.  Our services include economic analysis, cost-benefit analysis, risk assessments, environmental modeling, regulatory and voluntary program support, and IT solutions. Our clients include the Environmental Protection Agency, Army Corps of Engineers, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and the Department of Energy.


Abt Associates seeks a qualified Senior Analyst / Natural Resources to support the Environment and Natural Resources Division in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Key Roles and Responsibilities

  • The candidate(s) will support an interdisciplinary team conducting applied research and providing consulting services in support of environmental and natural resource management programs.
  • The candidate will be the lead investigator in economic and policy analysis, benefit cost and other quantitative analyses on issues of environmental and natural resource regulation and policy, particularly as pertains to programs under the Clean Water Act, Clean Air Act, Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), and Safe Drinking Water Act.
  • Duties may include analysis and synthesis of economic and resource valuation literature, use of statistical and other quantitative analyses to support benefit cost analyses, development of analytical methods, databases, and models to support projects encompassing one or more of the following topics: economic and policy analysis, environmental management programs, health and ecological risk assessment, natural resources damage assessment, and general environmental policy and program support.
  • The successful candidate will have substantial responsibility for performing this work, including formulating, directing, and documenting analyses. The candidate will also have extensive contact with clients and will support practice leaders in developing new business

Preferred Skills / Prerequisites

  • The preferred candidate will have a Master’s Degree or a Ph.D. in economics, resource/environmental economics, or a related discipline, with an outstanding academic record. Course work in economics, environmental/resource economics, statistics and econometrics is required. Course work in, environmental health and/or environmental sciences is a plus.
  • Excellent oral communication, writing, and analytical skills are essential.
  • Applied research experience (through employment or academic coursework) and demonstrated skills in the following areas are essential:
    • Economics and policy/regulatory analysis
    • Economic impact analysis and regional economic models
    • Research experience with sophisticated economic/environmental modeling and/or statistical/econometric analysis, including working with economic, environmental, and/or survey data and Bayesian statistical methods
    • Proficiency using statistical software packages such as Stata, SAS, or R

Minimum Qualifications

  • BA with 6 – 8 years of experience OR MA/MBA (3) years of experience OR PhD (Entry Level) OR the equivalent combination of education and experience.
