Environmental and Social Sustainable Finance Consultant

ERM is seeking an Environmental and Social Sustainable Finance Consultant to join our global consulting team in Washington DC or Annapolis, MD.  The ideal candidate is a generalist who exhibits a confident and self-starting approach to work assignments and a willingness to work in a team-oriented environment with frequent assignment hand-offs and changes in work direction. A successful candidate will have a good understanding of and experience with impact assessment and international lender standards (e.g., IFC Performance Standards) and special emphasis on social analysis and human rights issues.

This role supports all types of sustainable finance projects; and the ideal hire would relatively quickly step up to a leading role in smaller assignments and projects.  Work aligns with the approach and pace of international lenders and their project developer clients.  The position requires a robust understanding of the ESIA process, sustainability elements of large capital projects, good data analysis and review skills, the ability to liaise and engage with a range of stakeholders. Role will support and prepare technical reports ranging from environmental and social due diligence to environmental and social impact assessments, policy studies and guidance documents.  The position provides the opportunity to support projects in the U.S. and internationally, assisting clients in achieving their business goals in a sustainable way.  It requires a mixture of field and office work and the ability to work in multidisciplinary teams across regions and practices. 


  • Conduct environmental and social due diligence reviews, monitoring reviews and gap analysis against Lender requirements, which may include travel internationally and in remote locations.

  • Support U.S. and international projects associated with impact assessment (ESIA) and sustainable finance, including participating in baseline data collection, impact assessment, management plan and management system development, and monitoring.

  • Develop and help deliver trainings, and support facilitation of meetings.

  • Quickly develop organizational, project management, financial management skills to play a leading role on smaller projects.

  • Work fluidly as part of interdisciplinary impact assessment teams.


  • BA/BS/MSc in environmental sciences, environmental engineering, social sciences, natural resource science discipline.

  • Minimum 3 years of consulting, regulatory, or development experience in a similar role.

  • Demonstrated experience supporting environmental and social impact assessments.

  • International work experience.

  • Strong analytical skills.

  • Strong project management and team management aptitudes.

  • Demonstrated technical writing ability (impact assessment writing sample required).

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently on work products that meet high professional and business standards.

  • Well-developed communication and cognitive skills and a desire to work in a team-oriented environment.

  • Ability to multi-task, maintains flexibility, travel within U.S. and international locations, and work independently, when required, with minimal supervision.

  • Ability to develop and adhere to health and safety requirements and manage the safety of field teams.

  • Fluency in Spanish and ideally other languages (e.g., Portuguese, French).

Additional Skills:

  • Familiarity with geographic information systems (GIS), electronic field data collection, and GPS equipment.

  • Familiarity with international lender requirements (Equator Principles and International Finance Corporation Performance Standards).

  • Experience in key issues such as management systems, pollution prevention, biodiversity, water resources management, climate change, cultural resources, stakeholder engagement and/or baseline assessments.

  • Knowledge of the extractives and infrastructure sectors (i.e., mining, oil and gas, power, infrastructure).
