The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is a non-profit national environmental advocacy organization with more than 1.2 million members and online activists.  We have offices in New York, Washington, D.C., San Francisco and Los Angeles, Chicago and Beijing.  Our staff of over 500 includes attorneys, scientists, policy analysts and educators working to protect the environment and public health through advocacy and education.

NRDC is seeking an intern to work with the Center for Policy Advocacy.

The Center for Policy Advocacy (CPA) is comprised of mainly 5 teams: California Advocacy, Environmental Entrepreneurs (E2), State and Federal Campaigns, Government Affairs, and Partnership Engagement which fall under the leadership of the Director of the Center for Policy Advocacy, Ed Yoon.  The members of CPA work to advance the organization’s key policy objectives and lead the development and execution of the organization’s power-building strategy.

This Internship is a paid Internship, requires a minimum work schedule of 30 hours per week and offers flexible hours.


We are looking for interns to work within the Center for Policy Advocacy specifically with the Government Affairs and Campaign programs. Project topics may include legislative research and memo writing. There may also be opportunities to contribute to defending critical environmental legislation. Candidates must possess excellent interpersonal and organizational skills and be able to work effectively in a fast-paced team environment. The candidate should also have strong written and oral communication skills.

Candidates will be expected to attend meetings, draft notes, and compile action items for distribution. Candidates will also assist with researching relevant news on environmental policy and politics at the federal, state and local levels to support our environmental advocacy work and may cover hearings on the Hill depending on their schedule.

  • Support the Government Affairs and Campaign teams track legislative activities and take notes at congressional hearings, think tank events, and other venues of information sharing.
  • Become familiar with the most pressing environmental issues in Congress and the federal government; comprehend threats against environmental laws and NRDC’s tactics to address such issues.
  • Participate in and take notes for internal discussions and external coalition and congressional meetings.
  • Produce digital content for our social media accounts and support online


  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program at a college, community college, or university (two-to-four year institution)
  • Graduated from an undergraduate or graduate degree program at a college, community college, or university (two-to-four year institution)
  • Must have strong grades (3.0 or better), statistical, analytical, writing, research skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
    Provide administrative and research assistance to legislative advocates developing and implementing legislative strategies.
  • Previous Hill or Legislative experience is a plus;
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with the capability to handle multiple tasks, work well under pressure and be detail-oriented;
  • Ability to work independently as well as with a team;
  • High degree of proficiency with Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint.
