Mapping Center Research Scientist – Water Levels

Conduct research in the determination and prediction of precise sea water levels. This is a research scientist position with compensation commensurate with scientific expertise and experience.

The Division of Marine Science is located at NASA’s John C. Stennis Space Center (SSC), Mississippi, where it occupies three buildings. SSC is a federal facility with more than 5,000 employees and is home to ocean related agencies including Naval Research Laboratory (NRL-SSC), U.S. Naval Oceanographic Office, Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command (CNMOC), NOAA’s National Data Buoy Center, NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information, NASA Applied Sciences Directorate, and the Maury Oceanographic Library, one of the nation’s premier oceanographic libraries.  

Conduct research in exploiting novel methods to enhance the precise determination of sea water levels. Conduct research in the determination of the relative contribution of land subsidence and sea level rise to overall sea level rise. Teach Waves, Tides and Water Level Measurements topics at the graduate level. Pursue additional external funding in lines with the goals of the Hydrographic Science Research Center.  
Doctoral degree (Ph.D.) in Geomatics, Hydrography, Physical Oceanography or similar related science or engineering field. Familiar with the installation and operations of various types of tide gauges. Understanding of the theory and application of V-Datum.
