Why does the job exist?
The purpose of this internship position will be under the supervision of the District Manager and will assist the District III WRAB staff by completing work associated with the Mimbres Underground Water Basin abstract project. This position may also assist other District Office staff with various program duties within the Water Resources Allocation Program. The additional support will help the agency complete critical water rights projects and deal with an increase in workload due to an ongoing drought in New Mexico.
How does it get done?
Assist the Deming District III with mission-critical tasks associated with water rights administration including the following:
I. This position will assist the District 3 WRAB staff by completing tasks related to the Mimbres Underground
Water Basin abstract project. These tasks will include researching domestic water right permits, sorting and
comparing water right files, entering data into excel spreadsheets and into the WATERS database, and
scanning water rights into the agency’s Feith imaging system.
2. The position may also assist District Staff with reading and mapping technical data by legal descriptions
and Global Positioning System (GPS) by utilizing internal USGS Map Locator Tool and Graphic Information
System (GIS). This work will include creating Point of Diversion layers, COGO, and other GIS projects as
needed.
3. This position may also serve to assist in administering both surface water and groundwater rights in District
3’s administrative areas by analyzing data, creating and updating spreadsheets.
4. This position may require some field work and include surface water hydrology, stream measurement, data
management, water resource management, and community outreach.

Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will:
1. Provide excellent customer service skills to assist the public in-person and on the telephone, and route
telephone calls to internal staff members.
2. Ability to read warranty deeds, maps, plats, surveys and property records using technical mapping data
by legal descriptions and Global Positioning System (GPS) by utilizing internal USGS Map Locator Tool
and Graphic Information System (GIS).
3. Process and Issue permits.
4. Enter data and maintain database integrity.
5. Conduct fieldwork to assist in administering both surface water and groundwater rights by analyzing data,
creating and updating spreadsheets.
Minimum Qualification
Currently enrolled in an accredited college or university OR completion of at least four (4) semesters (or equivalent) at an accredited college or university within the last two (2) years.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending and reaching may be required. Use of Xerox machine, scanners, printers and telephone. Occasional field work requires use of digital cameras and a global positioning system.
