Job Summary: The Assistant Research Professional should show evidence of competence in the disciplinary area of the position and demonstrated promise of moving towards excellence in professional leadership, practice, and/or research and scholarly activities as appropriate for the position. As directed, individuals in this track level independently contribute to the planning and design of research and creative projects. He/she performs supporting research and creative activities such as data analysis, monitoring outcomes, performing lab maintenance, and/or performing experiments and creating creative projects. May assist in both short-term and long-term planning and project goals, as well as in research and creative proposals and dissemination of project findings. Additional Department Summary: The University of Alabama’s Remote Sensing Center is looking for a Software Engineer that will report directly to the Director, Dr. Prasad Gogineni, and work collaboratively with NOAA/National Water Center located on UA’s campus. Desired focus areas include: Software development, Big Data, and water prediction models. The position will be responsible for developing production-grade software for processing large-scale geospatial data for analysis and visualization of national hydrologic model outputs. This non-tenure earning position is expected to work in small interdisciplinary teams and collaborate with senior research staff within the NOAA/National Water Center located on UA’s campus.
Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Successful candidates will have a Master’s degree or higher. For candidates demonstrating comparable independent research and creative productivity, a Bachelor’s degree and one (1) or more years of documented relevant experience in Geography, Engineering, Computer Science, or closely related field may be substituted.
Skills and Knowledge: Expertise in software development, open-source GIS software, and tools, in Windows and Linux environments. Demonstrated creative productivity; effective communication skills; and demonstrated ability to work in a multidisciplinary environment.
