The Role
Headquartered in California’s agriculture rich Central Valley, Wonderful Orchards is the largest grower of almonds, pistachios, and pomegranates in the world. Growing over 12 million trees across 100,000 acres requires lots of time, care and…water! That’s why our Wonderful team is growing – We are looking for a seasoned water resources expert to head our water resources team.
Position Overview:
This position will develop, coordinate, and execute the short and long-term water supply and management strategies for the Wonderful agricultural entities. The position will represent Wonderful and develop relationships with policymakers in the water and agricultural community with an initial focus on the areas of Kern, Tulare, Kings, Fresno, and Madera counties. The position will be a Director to Vice President level depending on qualifications and will report directly to the President.
Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
  • Creating and implementing comprehensive strategies to ensure reliable, long-term water supplies to ~130,000 acres of permanent crops in over 30 districts and 20 Groundwater Sustainability Agencies (GSAs) throughout the Central Valley and Central Coast regions of California
  • Developing and cultivating relationships with local agency staff, elected officials, landowners, and other stakeholders to effectively represent Wonderful on a broad range of water issues
  • Identifying and overseeing water purchases, transfers, and exchanges throughout the Central Valley on behalf of Wonderful
  • Establishing and executing resource management plans that focus on water supply impacts of The Sustainable Groundwater Management Act, drought planning and water banking
  • Overseeing water related aspects of due diligence for property and water asset acquisitions
  • Developing budgets and managing variances for the department
  • Guiding the development of feasibility studies and timelines for in-house and other infrastructure projects (e.g., water banking facilities/programs, Delta Conveyance Facility, Friant-Kern Canal capacity correction, etc.)
  • Ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local policies, regulations, and approvals (e.g., CEQA, NEPA, State Board petitions and water right filings, transaction request forms, etc.)
  • Representing the organization on water related boards and committees
  • Leading interaction between Wonderful business units related to water needs
Here’s what we are looking for:
Bachelor’s degree in Water Resources, Agricultural Business, Agricultural Economics, Engineering, Business or related field and 10+ years related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. Minimum 5 years senior level experience managing operations and support teams.
  • Able to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Proficient using Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint). Usage of Water Modeling software desired
  • Strong financial acumen and knowledge of cost accounting
  • Quantitative and qualitative analytical skills with attention to detail
Technical background/ knowledge:
  • Working knowledge of water resources including water rights and regulatory compliance
  • Significant knowledge of state and federal regulatory requirements
