The Centre for Tropical Water and Aquatic Ecosystem Research (TropWATER) is Australia’s premiere tropical aquatic research group and is an amalgamation of aquatic expertise from across James Cook University (JCU). The Centre comprises of over 150 staff and 100 post-graduate students and performs research in fields related to water science, resource management and the ecology of water ecosystems.

 TropWATER now has an opportunity for two Research Workers to join the team on a full-time; fixed term basis to 31 December 2024. Remuneration at HEWL 5 $65,650 – $74,462 p.a. +17% employer superannuation contributions. Both positions are located at the Townsville Bebegu Yumba Campus, in the new spacious and modern Australian Tropical Sciences and Innovation Precinct (ATSIP).

About the Roles

The Research Workers provide high-level support for the operations of TropWATER’s research contracts and consultancies. The incumbents work as part of a team supporting the delivery of project milestones for TropWATER’s Catchment to Reef Research Group.

The Catchment to Reef Research Group has operated a water quality monitoring and assessment program in the catchment areas of the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) for a number of years across various spatial scales (paddock, catchment, estuary and marine) and from the major land uses, including sugarcane, grazing, bananas, urban, industry and forested/conservation lands.

 What you will bring to the role

As a qualified and experienced researcher, you will have proven skills in the collation and analysis of scientific data. You will also be experienced in leading, organising and participating in field trips and other logistical operations including maintaining equipment, preferably water quality meters and flow-measuring, or similar equipment.
