About the Project
The presence of emerging pesticide contaminants in water courses poses potential significant environmental and health concerns. Veterinary spot-on products containing pesticides like fipronil, imidacloprid, and pyrethroids, have been identified as a primary source of contamination. This study investigates the occurrence and fate of these contaminants in water courses, exploring their relation to veterinary spot-on products. These pesticides are often highly toxic to insects, crustaceans, fish & small mammals.
The environmental and health implications of these contaminants are substantial. Aquatic organisms are vulnerable to pesticide exposure, leading to changes in behaviour, physiology, and mortality. Human consumption of contaminated water and food poses health risks, particularly for vulnerable populations. To mitigate these impacts, integrated pest management strategies, alternative parasite control methods, and revised labeling requirements are essential.
There is an urgent need for evidence-based policies to address emerging pesticide contaminants in water courses. Policy initiatives, wastewater treatment upgrades, and public awareness campaigns can reduce contamination. Further research is necessary to investigate toxicity and ecological risk assessments, informing effective mitigation strategies. The study’s findings will contribute to the development of sustainable solutions for protecting water courses and public health.
