The Geological Survey of Finland (GTK) is looking for a research scientist or senior scientist for the Water and Mining Environment Solutions unit. Your office is in Espoo, Kuopio, Rovaniemi or Kokkola and you can also work remotely flexibly in Finland.

You will work as an expert in jointly funded research projects and in commercial work for our customers. The research themes involved with this position focus on water management, transport modelling of water and substances, geochemical modelling and risk assessment (soil, surface and groundwater). The research focuses primarily on mining environments, and you utilise artificial intelligence and machine learning in your work. Your tasks may also include the development and productisation of GTK’s modelling services.

In your work, you participate in the development of the sector’s activities, apply for project funding, and prepare and implement projects. Reporting on research and co-writing scientific publications are also part of your job description. The emphasis and responsibilities of the position depend on the experience and capabilities of the candidate. Depending on your competence, the position may involve project management, working in national and international networks and projects, as well as mentoring and thesis supervision. If you are hired as a Senior Scientist, your position will involve greater responsibility for tasks in your field.

In the Water and Mining Environment Solutions unit, you are part of a group of around 50 experts working on groundwater research, hydrogeochemistry, groundwater flow modelling, reactive transport modelling, mining environments and water management issues. The position is in a group focusing on mining environments.

Our expectations of the applicant

Education, experience and skills expected of the applicant

• Master’s degree in geology, hydrogeology or other applicable field
• Research experience in geochemistry, hydrogeology and environmental research
• Strong expertise in flow modelling, geochemical and/or transport modelling
• Good IT skills and easy command of modelling software
• Strong interest in research and a multidisciplinary, independent and active approach
to it as well as the ability to work in multinational teams
• Willingness to travel both in Finland and abroad, e.g. for project meetings,
conferences, expert or customer meetings (approx. 5–20 days a year)
• Fluency in written and spoken English

Education, experience and skills that are appreciated

• Doctoral degree in a field suitable for the position
• Experience in mining environments (e.g. geochemistry, hydrogeology and
environmental research)
• Experience in research on contaminated soil and metals
• Skills to apply artificial intelligence and machine learning in modelling
• Experience in project management tasks and international projects
• Experience of different funding instruments and application channels
• Demonstrated ability to network and experience in stakeholder and customer work
• Finnish language proficiency

You have good cooperation and networking skills and capabilities for interaction with different stakeholders. You are innovative, take initiative and act independently in your work. You want to continuously learn new things and you follow developments in the field, work well under pressure, and know how to prioritise tasks.
