The Position 

As a River Operator you will be part of managing the River Murray System to support partner governments, the environment, farming and other industries for the benefit of the Australian community.

The role works closely with other parts of the River Management Portfolio and the Murray-Darling Basin Authority, other agencies of the Australian Government, the Basin States and Territories and wider stakeholders.


Your key responsibilities in this role are to:


APS 6 Level

  • Support the ongoing management of the River Murray System.
  • Manage River Murray System operations in real-time. 
  •  Exercise judgement and assume responsibility for the daily operation of the dams, weirs and environmental regulators of the River Murray System.
  • Operate the system to meet a range of competing stakeholder needs including irrigators, environmental water holders and recreational users.
  • Work closely with the River Operations program, the River Management portfolio of the Murray Darling Basin Authority, Basin states, environmental water holders and the general public.
  • Support and deliver the development of new tools and operational practices and policies to realise the objectives and outcomes of operating the River Murray System. 


APS 5 Level

  • Work under limited direction and provide specialised advice.
  • Develop effective working relationships with other work areas and external agencies and facilitate cross-agency or multi-agency planning and delivery of project tasks and outcomes.
  • Develop knowledge and expertise in relation to professional skills and the program area.
  • Prepare procedural or technical material, as well as reports and briefings.
  • Assist in strategic planning, program and project management for the work area, including anticipating problems and contributing to issues management.
  • Make decisions using good judgement that accesses relevant expertise and knowledge, and model personal integrity.
  • Good collaboration and communication skills and sound technical ability.
