WHO WE ARE
Founded in 1951, the Nature Conservancy is a global conservation organization dedicated to conserving the lands and waters on which all life depends. Guided by science, we create innovative, on-the-ground solutions to our world’s toughest challenges so that nature and people can thrive together. Working in 72 countries, including all 50 United States, we use a collaborative approach that engages local communities, governments, the private sector, and other partners. To learn more, visit www.nature.org.
The Nature Conservancy (TNC) has shown that nature-based solutions (NbS)âsustainably managing, restoring and protecting forests and other landsâcan provide up to a third of the solution to climate change by 2030. NbS can also provide a range of other benefits, such as protecting biodiversity, improving watershed function, increasing resilience, and supporting sustainable livelihoods. As public concern about climate change drives corporate and other net-zero commitments, interest in carbon markets is growing exponentially, and in particular how such markets can support the scaling of NbS.
Southeast Asia is facing unprecedented demand for carbon abatement and hence, an unparalleled opportunity to access and direct climate finance to NbS that deliver not only climate outcomes, but outcomes for biodiversity and people as well. In Asia Pacific, TNC has joined with 8 other NGOs to form the Southeast Asia Climate and Nature-based Solution (SCeNe) Coalition* in recognition of the scale of action required, the time-bound opportunity for impact and the risks to people and nature if we do not act collaboratively to speed up and scale up design and implementation of high-integrity and high-quality NbS. The extensive experience of these environmental NGOs in the development and execution of NbS offers a powerful, shared platform to inform and influence this rapidly growing sector.
In the first three years (2023-25), the Coalition will focus on three inter-connected workstreams that together will scale NbS in the region: i) enable easy access to the documentation, data and methods needed to develop and monitor âtriple benefitâ NbS projects; ii) showcase high-integrity projects to inspire others; and iii) support national and local organizations to access carbon finance and secure funds for conservation.
The Governance of the Coalition includes a Steering Committee comprised of the Asia-based leaders of the member organizations, with a rotating Chair. The Steering Committee has overall responsibility for the strategy, oversight, fundraising and delivery of the Coalition aims. Each workstream is led by a member organization (i.e. Workstream Lead) with all members contributing time and expertise through Expert Teams. The Coalition is led by the NbS Partnerships Lead who will also oversee the Secretariat with the aim to accelerate the pace and scale of the Coalitionâs impact, including building a small Secretariat team to be hosted by TNC, subject to the successful execution and resourcing of the Coalitionâs full body of work.
WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER
The NbS Partnerships Coordinator will be a part of the SCeNe secretariat and support the management of priority partnerships (including the Coalitionâs three key workstreams and fundraising) to advance the work of the Coalition and TNCâs climate priorities and 2030 Goals primarily in Southeast Asia. This includes support for and contribute to the day-to-day management of the SCeNe Coalition across all workstreams, including administrative and programmatic functions. The NbS Partnerships Coordinator works directly with Coalition member organizations, TNC country and global teams and other partners to drive timely and high-quality execution of agreed work plans and deliverables and establish the SCeNe Coalition and TNC as a valued and trusted partner.
The NbS Partnerships Coordinator supports the NbS Partnerships Lead to achieve the deliverables of the SCeNe Coalition, with a focus on coordinating and actioning on decisions of the Steering Committee, overseeing the delivery of the Coalitionâs workstreams and managing reporting and relationships with existing supporters (working closely with workstream leads in member organizations). The NbS Partnerships Coordinator also supports the NbS Partnerships Lead to identify, secure and steward strategic partnerships and donors in Singapore and beyond.
The NbS Partnerships Coordinator reports directly to the NbS Partnerships Lead and will be a part of TNCâs APAC Climate Partnerships team. The NbS Partnerships Coordinator will be expected to work with the existing NbS Partnerships Coordinator and support the NbS Partnerships Lead and the Coalitionâs chairperson and steering committee to develop and execute the Coalitionâs approved activities and budget in the Coalition work plan.
