DEQ has an open opportunity for an Environmental Specialist I.
It is full-time (40 hours per week) with State Benefits.
This position currently qualifies for a hybrid telework option with routine office and remote workdays. The NC Department of Environmental Quality trusts our employees to be self-motivated and successful in hybrid/remote roles. Telework options are subject to change at the discretion of management.
The Environmental Specialist I will work within the Division of Water Resources, Groundwater Resources Branch, Monitoring Unit. The Monitoring Unit is responsible for the measurement and maintenance of the Division’s statewide groundwater monitoring well network. Key Responsibilities:
- Collecting groundwater level data, maintaining, downloading, and replacing data loggers and telemetry equipment, and sampling of monitoring wells for water quality parameters.
- Locating and surveying wells and other points using GPS technology, installing monuments, and conducting site leveling and GPS satellite grade surveying.
- Maintaining groundwater monitoring well stations, video-logging wells, renovating and supervising renovations of the Division’s well network along with developing wells and aquifer testing.
- Interpreting and analyzing groundwater data and preparing hydrographs and maps.
- Driving trucks long distances (occasionally with a trailer in tow).
- Carrying up to 50 pounds, unassisted, working in inclement weather, walking long distances over rugged terrain and working independently.
The Division of Water Resources:
The Division of Water Resources is responsible for protecting North Carolina’s drinking, surface and groundwater for all waterbodies including lakes, streams, rivers, wetlands and aquifers. This environmental stewardship is accomplished through actions including permitting issuance, investigations, regulatory compliance and enforcement, monitoring and field assessments, certifications, laboratory analysis and testing, planning, water quality standards management, educational outreach and other efforts. The Division comprises six Sections: Water Quality Regional Operations; Water Sciences; Public Water Supply; Water Quality Permitting; Groundwater Resources, and Water Planning.
