Job Summary

The Division of Ecological and Water Resources is seeking to hire a full-time permanent Lake Level Monitoring Hydrologist. The Lake Level Monitoring Hydrologist manages the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources’ (DNR) lake level monitoring program, database, and technical applications.

Responsibilities:

  • To lead and assist with the operation and maintenance of DNR EWR’s lake level and wetland level data collection program so that sound data are available for water resources management, planning, and problem solving.
  • Manage lake level volunteers, contacts, training for monitoring partners and vendors, and assist with processing of water level data. 
  • To operate and maintain DNR monitoring sites and manage data so that quality data is available for the wise management of surface water resources. 
  • Provide professional hydrologic monitoring data analysis and reporting. 

This position requires the ability to install and maintain water monitoring equipment, to walk to sites in rugged terrain and carry equipment up to 50 lbs. over the terrain. 

This position has a flexible work arrangement and may be eligible to telework on a part-time basis which is subject to change. If approved, the employee would be required to complete an annual telework agreement.

Transcript Requirements:

  • Three hydrology qualifying courses in the areas of: Hydrology, Hydraulics, Hydrogeology/Groundwater Hydrology, Water Resources Engineering, Hydrologic Modeling, Watershed Management, Groundwater, Fluid Mechanics, fluvial geomorphology; OR
  • Two hydrology qualifying courses and two courses (or equivalent experience) in: Geology, Geomorphology, Geochemistry, Geography, Limnology, Erosion and Sediment Control, Environmental Engineering, Soils.

Additional qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Geological Engineering, Hydrology, Forest Hydrology, Geography, Geology, Geophysics, Hydrogeology, Natural Resources, Environmental Studies, Soil Science, Water Resources Management, Hydraulics, Environmental Science, Earth Science, or related major.
  • Two years of professional experience in surface water or groundwater hydrology, soil and water resource management, hydrogeology, hydrologic modeling, geochemistry or regulatory work (An advanced degree in the appropriate major may substitute for one year of experience).
  • Technical knowledge of hydrology, hydrogeology, hydraulics, principles and practices of water resource management.
  • Technical knowledge and ability to perform vertical elevation surveys and collect hydrographic data following USGS-defined field protocols.
  • Ability to coordinate with DNR staff, program volunteers, Soil and Water Conservation districts, and other partners in the management of the Minnesota Lake Level Monitoring program.
  • Ability to perform all tasks in a safe and healthful manner.
  • Ability to coordinate with DNR staff, program volunteers, Soil and Water Conservation districts, and other partners in the management of the Minnesota Lake Level Monitoring program.
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively as a team member, follow policies and procedures while consistently conducting oneself in a cooperative and courteous manner.
  • Ability to plan and track work amidst competing demands to ensure work products are completed in a timely manner.
  • Skills to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Technical skills to utilize WMS unit’s hydrologic databases and software for all hydrologic data workup, peer review, publishing, analysis, and reporting.
  • Experience using new GPS technology for collecting vertical elevations.
  • Experience in utilizing the WISKI database or similar hydrologic databases for groundwater, surface water and climate data workup and peer review. 
  • Knowledge of WMS data collection and workup policies and procedures. 
  • Experience in computer modeling, database management, geographic information systems, global positioning systems, or other mapping, information system and computerized analytical tools.

Additional Requirements

This position requires an unrestricted Class D Driver’s license with a clear driving record.
